Hey all... need some help in figuring this one out. I read through every post and saw a couple with the same issue a while ago, but no real solution. In late June this year, all servers' custom maps suddenly stopped auto downloading. It happened after one day I was downloading a custom map and it was going SO slow (~1k/s) that I cancelled out. I was kicked to the desktop and got an error ref something about "localized english..." file error. I went back in and from that point on, auto downloading no longer worked. A couple months later, I finally got fed up and completely uninstalled and reinstalled the game. Auto downloading WORKED again :)!!! It worked completely fine until about last month where it suddenly stopped working again  , but this time for no apparent reason (no similar event). I have NOT installed any Service Packs, made any changes to my system, or changed network configs, hardware, or services. This time it just seemingly for no reason stopped working with the exact same results... The download screen comes up, shows the download bar, shows 0% then gets stuck flashing the 0% off and on. This goes on endlessly until I hit [ESC], then I am kicked to the desktop with the same "localized english..." error. I know auto download is on the servers that I am having problems with because other machines (on and off my network) are able to download the same maps from that server. But it is VERY frustrating that this has now happened a second time for NO decernable reason. Running: P4 3.4 HT, 2GB RAM, 2 x 200 GB drives in RAID 0, ATI X800 XT PE 256, cable modem service... everything else works 100% Sorry for the diatribe, but I am very frustrated and wanted to give as much info as possible... BTW, Activision was no help... custom maps not supported. Thanx in advance... Cyanide
The problem is an error in a pk3 file which contains the 1.5 patch binaries for redirect downloads. this is in the localized_english_pak1.pk3 file.
Get out your COD CD1, place it in your CD ROM drive, and go to my computer. Right click the COD icon which will be showing in the ROM driver, and left click explore. You will see a folder called 'setup'. Double left click it and you will see a folder called 'Data. double click that, and you will see a folder called 'main'. The localized_english_pak1.pk3 is in there. Just copy it, and paste it into your COD 'main' folder, and 'replace' the existing one when prompted.
What are binaries? These are encoded hex data which cannot be seen unless you use a hex editor. The redirect binaries are the deep encoded data headers necessary to tell the game to send you to another website to download custom maps and mods rather than directly from a server.
Sehr gut!!! I will give it a try tonight when I get home from work :) ! Hopefully it will work... I am familliar with hex / bin editing & the sort, but if you could explain what could be causing the file to go corrupt so easily 2x now? The first time I could kinda understand, but this last time made no sense what so ever to me... Danke... und Axis uber alles! Cyanide
As for what causes the file to become corrupt, i have no answer - they just do!!! lol
UNfortunately it was not the fix ....:( I got the exact same result, sat at 0% download with the status bar empty. Finally it kicked me to the desktop with "Fatal Error" ... "Couldn't reopen C:\...\Call of Duty\main\localized_english_pak0.pk3" I tried to copy that file from the CD as well, but with the exact same result. I did neglect in my first post to mention that this is UO, not just CoD. But I also copied the UO localized_enlish pak file too. So still stuck unable to download new maps automatically  ! Any other ideas??? Thankx
Ah! heard of this before - the file, localized_english_pak0.pk3, has become read only, and cannot be opned during a multiplay session (as it needs to). this is caused by several AV software packages (Norton and McAfee being the prime culprits). You'll need to reinstall completely infortunately (COD & UO), and reconfigure your AV software once you've done it by telling it the specific file is 'trusted'.
The cause of this is once again the binaries in that file which some AV packages think is a threat.
just another dumb opinion
