In versions 1.0 through 1.2 the CD key was kept in a cdkey file on the hard drive, but in versions 1.3 and 1.4 it's now kept in the registry.

See if this Activision support article helps:

CD Key is getting deleted from the game Question My CD Key is getting deleted from the game. Answer Change the file property of the codkey file to read only if have a version of the game prior to 1.3. 1) Open up "My Computer" and head over to the directory where you have Call of Duty installed. The default location is C:\Program Files\Call of Duty. 2) Open the "Main" directory, right click on the "codkey" file and select "Properties." 3) On the bottom of the panel, you should see a "Read-only" check box. Check that, and hit "Ok" to apply the changes.

If you are using version 1.3 or later and Windows 2000 or Windows XP 1) Ensure you are logging on to your machine with administrator access. 2) Download and install all Service Packs and updates for your operating system.
