Activision Answers:

Question The game crashes or freezes while I am playing. Answer Make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements of the game.

Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.

Set your desktop to a resolution of 800x600, 32 bit True Color. 1) Right-click on your desktop and select Properties. 2) Click the Settings tab. 3) Set your screen area to 800x600. 4) Set the colors to 32 Bit (True Color). Under Windows NT this will be listed as 65554 colors. 5) Click Apply and OK.

All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.

Turn the hardware acceleration for your sound card to Basic. 1) Click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel. 2) Double-click on the Multimedia icon. 3) Select the Audio tab. 4) Click on the Advanced Properties button in the Playback section. 5) Click on the Performance tab. 6) Reduce the Hardware acceleration to Basic, the 2nd notch from the left. 7) Click Apply and then OK 2 times. Run the game now. Don't forget to turn the acceleration back up to restore the high-end features for your sound card when using other applications.

NOTE: For Windows XP 1) Click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel. 2) Double-click the Sounds and Audio Devices icon. 3) Click the Volume tab. 4) Under Speaker settings, click the Advanced button. 5) Click the Performance tab. 6) Reduce the Hardware acceleration to Basic, the 2nd notch from the left. 7) Click Apply and then OK 2 times. Run the game now. Don't forget to turn the acceleration back up to restore the high-end features for your sound card when using other applications.

I had the exact same problem but it would only do it on certain servers, not all of them. After several uninstall/reinstalls didn't help, this is what I did. I removed all pk3 files from the main folder and put them in a folder on my desktop. I reinstalled CoD. As I would connect to each server, I would either let them auto download any mods, maps, etc or I would pull them from the folder on my desktop if the download time was too slow. This worked for me. I'm assuming a bad pk3 file was the cause or one was conflicting with something. I had quite a few mods installed. That was quite awhile ago and I haven't had any trouble since. Maybe it will work for you.

right try this trick, go to the call of duty folder and then rename the config_mp file:

if its call of duty the file is located in Main folder - config_mp.cfg

if its United offensive file is in the uo folder - uoconfig_mp.cfg

to something like b4config_mp.cfg or in the case of united offensive b4uoconfig_mp.cfg, this is so you've got a backup of the file before doing anything.

Now launch the game into safe mode from the Start menu

Now try and join the server you have the problem with, if you still have a crash then it could be a program thats running in the back ground of windows that you've got running while playing the game. If this is the case, close the programs that you have running and try the safe mode again. If the safe mode works go back to the call of duty folder and now you should notice that you have a file config_mp.cfg / uoconfig_mp.cfg file in the folder, just rename this to safeconfig_mp.cfg / safeuoconfig_mp.cfg and then rename the old b4config_mp.cfg / b4config_mp.cfg back to config_mp.cfg / uoconfig_mp.cfg When you've done this try the game again with the programs in the back ground shut down.

Or as someone might just say shut all the programs in the background and try the game again and see if that works lol. If not just try the safe mode and see if that works :D

If worse comes to worse theres always reinstalling call of duty again :S
