Ping is determined by the type of connection you have (dialup, dsl, cable, etc) and how far you are from a server, ping is in milli-seconds. Cable is the best, dsl is 2nd and dialup is last(the worst). As for the 999 ping, are you behind a router or firewall? As when was the last time you checked for spyware?

Your ping is how fast a server can send a signal to your computer, and how fast your computer sends it back. It's similar to how the sonar on a submarene works. The lower your ping number is, the faster your internet connection (generally), and the better your game runs online. The acceptable threshold for a ping, and still having a decent and enjoyable game is around 250 for Call of Duty. To optimise your ping, first make sure that your ping matches your internet connection speed. You can check/change this in the "Join Servers" menu. Also, you can turn down the graphical settings in the options menu, but this will have only a slight effect on your ping. The best way to improve your ping, is to get a faster internet conection. At least DSL if you want to play on a server that has more than eight people. All of the servers with 32+ people have settings that will kick anyone with a ping that is too high. What is your connection type? With Dial-up, or anything less, online is pretty much worthless.

Not true! I have dial-up and have a real good time. I'm actually pretty good at it too. :)

It may sound obvious but try to keep to those servers out there that cater specifically for people on 56k dial up. You will at least be playing on equal terms. Other than this the only real answer is dsl or cable. H
