Hey all, love the site.

I am new to doing PC mods. But I have a little bit of knowledge. Ok so this is what I did/found out etc

Found out that the .iwd files can be opened in winrar and all the files for weapon data etc are in iw_13.iwd. Now I found the file I wanted to mod: (in iw_13.iwd) weapons/mp/mp40_mp So I extracted it to a local folder(My Documents) and opened mp40_mp in notepad. To my suprise in was in just regular text and looked very easy to mod. I went through and tried to find something that could be changed easly and would effect the gun right when I picked it up. Heres what I did: orignal code: ammoName\mp40\maxAmmo\192\startAmmo\192\clipName\mp40\clipSize\32\shotCount\1\ After I modifed ammoName\mp40\maxAmmo\500\startAmmo\192\clipName\mp40\clipSize\50\shotCount\1\

Ok so I just changed( I think ) the maxium ammount able to be held all together, and the clip size. Then I re added it back in after I saved the file( save it as orignal, didnt modify the file type or anything ) and re inserted it back into iw_13.iwd with winrar. I checked the file in winrar and the changes were there.

So I booted up COD2 single player and resumed a saved game, picked up a mp40. But all the attributes were the same. The clip size, and max able to hold. I exited the game and re checked the file in iw_13.iwd and the changes are still there.

Now why did it not change? Has something not be done right etc, or can you just not mod single player weapon data?

that's the multiplayer directory... you have to edit the file in weapons/sp and don't mod the iw_13 file directly, rather create a new .iwd file with the modded file and place it in your main folder, otherwise you'll have to reinstall if you want to play online

Also you need to name the mod starting with something the game will recognize as a valid mod. zzz is the most commonly used prefix for a mod name, and one that COD2 will recognize. For istance you could call it zzz_mp40_mod.iwd. Be aware as well that prior saves from unmodded gameplay will not work, you will get an error indicating the script does not match the save file.

I'm not really getting why you want to do such a mod, as that is a weapon used by the Germans and it will mostly be them benefitting from the bigger clip size, meaning fewer reloads for the enemies that carry them. The max ammo amount will only affect you when you decide to pick one up and use it though, as the bots never seem to run out of ammo.

You could as well even equip yourself with an mp40 at the start of any mission you choose by modding the loadout.gsc file found in iw_07.iwd under maps. In that case you just replace one of the issued weapon names with the name of the weapon you want to start the mission with.

Using zzz_ had nothing to do with a "name the game will recognise", but because of the way the game reads files.

It reads from A through Y. Hence, if you name a file starting Z, it will get read last.

This is critical for mods, because you want the game to read the file last of all. Having compiled the game with files read A - Y, if it is then presented with a file starting Z, it will use that "version" of the file last of all. therefore, the mod files will take effect, and over-ride all the other files the game might have read.

Thanks for all your help. I am not looking into doing anything to big. Just changing some weapon data and stuff like that. Right now I have the orignal weapon extracted out of iw_13.iwd in a local folder. So when I want to go online I just add the orignals back in. So I dont have to do all that other stuff. The MP40 was just the 1st weapon I saw and knew. I have moved on to others now. I am suprised how easy it is just to do modify weapons like this. Lots of fun :)
