COD2 - problems loading, sound system initialization -1 reply

Despite reinstalls, driver updates, playing with sound settings (including setting hardware acceleration to 'basic'), I can't get COD2 singleplayer to load.

I have Realtek AC'97 Audio, with the latest driver.

Please help!!!

Looks like an invalid install to me. What are your system specs? Maybe the problem lies there.

Uninstall the game (again), remember to also delete the game folder! When re-installing, make sure you install it to the DEFAULT folder eg: C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2 (not G:\) CoD2 seems to be the same as CoD/UO, if you do not install to the default,it will not find some of the files,and refuse to start!

Yeah, G:\ is a very unusual destination to install too. Like Major_day said it's generally best to install software to it's default location. Also, a Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440 gfx card is a tad old and may struggle with COD2 even in directX 7. The rest of your computer specs seem quite capable of running COD2, you should consider buying a newer gfx card.
