I ran a serach on this error on the Activision Support site, but no matches came back.

i would imagine its a Windows reigstry error as 'no version' seems to indicate a 'version' mismatch.

is this a genuine copy of COD2?

Ok, hunted down this problem, and it seems I was right - a registry issue. The game isnt installed to a drive it recognises.

See this thread for a short discussion of it:

There are 2 ways forward:

1. using regedit - only to be undertaken by skilled pc users.

Doing this, you check that the drive info in the registry is accurate. In particular, check the MultiEXEString and the EXEString are correct. It should refer to where the cod2mp_s.exe is installed (default is C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2\cod2mp_s.exe), and where the directroy for cod2 is (default is C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2\cod2sp_s.exe).

Make sure that the registry info points to the place where you installed it. If it doesnt, edit the values to make it match correctly.

2. Reinstall the game to the C: drive. Short and simple.
