Hi. I'm enjoying CoH:OF, but I can't help feel Relic missed a trick here. I've always wanted to see the Italians in a WWII game as there not often seen in films, games, documentary's, etc.
I don't know how well armed they were, what vehicles they used. Maybe they were unsuitable for RTS games (not enough branches on the tech tree)
What do you guys think?
O.K. I found a good website with info on small arms, armor, etc.
Relic should make another expansion with Russians, Italians, and Japanese/US Marines. WITHOUT the new gay security measures. The Pacific Theater is always overlooked.
Probably because so much of it was naval/air. BUT...I agree that it would be nice if the next expansion was Japanese/Marines. and yes, Italians in a North Africa setting would be a great addition, even if thier army was mostly emberassing. Personally, I'd love to see a change of scenery. Either winter or jungle. it's hard to imagine not buying future expansions for this title, despite the recent unwelcome changes. What a great game.
I think CoH could do good things with the Pacific theater. Island hopping for one, Age of Empires style = using transport boats for shifting forces. Maybe have one big ship off to the corner. They do use planes effectivly now, to many games get too much airpower and now its limited by resources for use of straffing/bombing runs. The same principal could be used. Im liking winter and North Africa too. Hardly any games have gone there, Call of Duty is all I can think of.
CoH won't become "AoE style" in any way, now do i think there will be boats added in anyway either as the engine wasn't designed for it, and except for really shallow water, you units can't even get near the water line. The Pacific won't happen for this version of CoH as the engine won't be able to handle all the trees, shrubbery, and water/swamp that the maps would include, and also the Pacific campaigns were mostly infantry heavy with only light armour and plenty of naval and air cover. Relic can't put controllable naval vessels or aircraft ingame as once again the engine wasn't designed for it, and there would be way too much work in doing the coding and AI for them. Because the campaign was focused so much around infantry and light armour, it would be impossible to balance the units against the existing factions, and there would be even more people complaining about infantry spam and light tank spam then there is now for OF. Not to mention the Japs in Multiplayer fighting in Europe would be kinda wierd, and as the factions would be focused on light stuff, not to many people would play as them, so it would be a waste of time making them. In all i'd say the Pacific theatre would be for CoH2, where there would be a much better engine to handle the increased foliage and terrain detail, as well as they can design it for those things i outlined above, and with the game not being compatable with CoH, they wouldn't have to worry about balancing them with the old factions. the Pacific has enough room for a couple of expansions too, IJA vs USMC, IJA vs Commonwealth, IJA vs China, etc. The Italians are do able focusing on Sicily or Italy, with Italian infantry, crewed weapons, light armour and artillary, and supplemented by German heavier armour (historically accurate), as well as the climate and landscape is close to the Normandy landscape, so won't require much work implementing whole new texture and building sets ingame, as well as the Italians would still work in a Normandy or a future Eastern Front map. Personally i don't think relics proposed Operation: Sealion expansion will happen, as the actual operation itself was cancelled, so i think either a Eastern Front expansion with Russian and a new German faction will be next, or a combined Russian (Russian Offensive '43-44) expansion and Italian (Defense of Italy '44) expansion would be most likely, and hell the Italians did fight on the Eastern Front with the Germans, so they would still fit in a Multiplayer match on a eastern front map, and could even make a small appearance in the Russian campaign. I don't think a North Africa expansion would happen either just yet for most of the same reasons as the pacific, it featured a larger % of infantry and crewed weapons : tanks ratio, and the tanks were a weaker and more inferior to the '44 Normandy/Holland factions ingame ATM, so it would be near impossible to balance and keep them from just being spamming units, not to mention it would just be German/Italian vs British factions, with a number of units from OF being ported over.
To keep from spamming units various maps could have a build limit of whatever unit is prone to spammation. Like it is with Hummels and Priests, any more than 3 of those equals total pwnage. I dont agree with all the wah wah boo hoo balance issues, war is war, uneveness occurs. Drive on and make it work. Be flexible and adaptive.
Italians would be cool, they could have a doctorine called swich sides:lol: i mean tehy basicly didnt do anything: when germany invaded france italy attacked from south but didnt get anywere when italy was fighting in north afrika they were losing aginst the brits untill the germans arrived when they attacked grece they were losing and asked the germans for help and when the allies attacked italy, they surrendered and germany defended their homeland......

Amen to that :D
Another commander ability would be "Retreat all squads to HQ" and special troops would be "flee troops"
as lethal dosage probably knows (hi dosage :]), i'm totally down with an eastern front... russians would be the way to go with the next one. that russian/italian thing might be oK but maybe relic would pull another german faction out of the hat. the next logical step seems like an eastern front and if/when it gets here, i'm all over it. italians might be oK but as we all know they kind of sucked so maybe an ss faction or something else from the germans might be better.
