Maybe this is just me but I think the files area is a mess. While I do realize many COH gamers have long moved onto OF, there seems to no real distinction when it comes to reviews or author's notes about for example, this kind of quote: "works with COH and OF"

I always get confused when I see in a mod/map description "works with COH and OF" - As in, just what exactly was the version(s) of COH that this will work with? I think one of my sticking points about this site is that there's no real dividing line between the two games it seems, but there is. Some version information might be more helpful to the casual downloader is all I'm saying.

Anything beyond COH 1.71 to me appears to be OF just going off of patch content notes etc. Trial and error downloading is not exactly a fun experience.

Anyway, rant off. Had to get that off my chest. Happy MOD/Mapping.

Well map-wise not much changed through the hiostory of CoH and OF, only OF added a few more detail, buildings, etc. and screwed up WorldBuilder a lot, so if a map works with CoH it'll also with in OF (unless it has SCAR coding), but maps made in/for OF probably won't work in CoH becasue of all the new stuff added in v2.0 (OF), unless however the owner has patched his CoH above v2.0, then maps made for OF should work. Mods on the other had and very sensitive about the game version, and a mod made for 1 game version more than likely won't totally work with older or newer versions of the game, and so the modder should state in the readme just which version of the game the mos works with, and any other versions it's been tested and works with. Unfortuantly a lot of amature modders barely even write a readme, and don't include much useful info at all, and rarely include a Changelog. While i use a set format for all my Readmes, it's pretty pointless trying to implement a standard format for everyone due to the large number of community websites and forums, and the fact that amature modders and mapper (the most guilty), rarely visit these sites much, and will probably just either not notice it or ignore it and do whatever they can be bothered doing in terms of documentation.

I suppose to some degree its understandable, you know, the mentality of "just get that map/mod out there." More than that, the way this game confused everyone from version to version was kind of nuts. I don't think that I've seen so many discrepancies between versions of a game before, to make modders and mappers nuts like this anyway. Especially with the world builder issues an such. Anyway, the end result is that its ultimately harder on the consumers of mods/maps, cause if they can't get something to work on the first, second or third try, they're moving on to a whole new game, and that'll hurt the overall community for a product I believe.

As Lethal Dosage said, there is so many new items and levels of detail that came with the OF world builder, even some states of buildings that existed before OF. It is near impossible for a map makers to make a COH compatible map anymore. So it's safe to say that all maps now are for OF.

Well unless the mapper either doesn't have OF, or uses a seperate install of CoH patched to v1.71 for making maps, which i know of a few mapps who do as the v1.71 version is more stable and crashes less.
