Well what I like to do is to pause the game when I play vs. the comp so I can do some basic tasks like building barbed wire or defensive structures. Remember you can hold down the shift button while assigning your units tasks so they move on to the next objective as soon as they finish one. I hit pause and assign my engineers/pioneers to lay down barbed wire at choke-points to cut the other team off early. Once I unpause the game, my units are off to do their duties all over the map. I don't build any base buildings until I have like 3 engineers/pioneers already out in the field laying barbed wire.

This technique helps when you are still getting used to the game and are having trouble against the computer, well atleast it has helped my game play. The computer doesn't cut barbed wire so your wire is usually good until they can produce armor. So if you block them into a small area with not a lot of resources you have time to build up a defense against any thing they can throw at you. Machine gun nests, snipers, AT guns, sand bags, medic stations and so on. Try to put down tank traps at the choke points you don't want used. Personally I only leave on route without tank traps that I use for my main attack. I like to build a field base from an abandoned building close to my main route so I can reinforce and recruit faster.

All and all its how you want to play the game, your strategy. I personally like being on the defensive and repelling the enemy attacks with my strong defensive front. Every one has their own style but this is my method. Use what you like and have fun. There are mods out there if you want to use them also.

Ya like FlakNinja said definately need too use the pause for vs comp. I like to capture as many resource points as poss so you can build cuz thats what AI is doing, & try to hold them. Once ya got enough of a force try to take his points keep his resources down. After ya play it awhile you will see that AI is not as smart as ya think. Guess I didn't realize that you could use the shift to Que movment have to remember that. Depending on what map you are using be sure to either close or make sure the forces are equal. Playing the 4 or more player maps I like to close all make 1vs 1 There are some nice customs maps out. Very true all depends what strategy ya like. Have not tried playing online yet hard to imagine not using the pause key but im use to turn based games. As far as RTS goes tho this is a good one.

I don't like the commando mod. It's to hard to control individual soldiers effectively. Plus the AI spams units left and right :uhoh:

Lower the difficulty. Fight effectively. Use cover to your advantage. Block passages with barbed wire and tank traps. TRy to create at least 3 engineer units. When your engineers are out in the field, leave an engineer unit at base to help you build faster. Use jeeps/motorcycles to help you capture points, then build on those points. Sometimes it also helps to make a run for the middle of the map, and take over those points, then work your way back to your base.

If you are playing solo against the computer, try having a computer ally. Sometimes they can be a useful distraction until you can build a decent base.
