Like many of you I love this game. But why dont they have air strips? That would be much more realistic, fun, ... if you could build a strip instead of just clicking on the icon and have the "planes" bomb the building, call for paratropers, and so on. I would even like to see silos. Keeps the icons for everything else. Why did they decide not to have airstrips?
I didn't make it!
I can't see the strategic benefit of placing your airstrip close enough to an enemy base that, if they overrun your forces you not only lose a forward base but also your air capabilities.
I'm not an expert on war but I don't think they did that in real life either.
i see your point about most of the maps in coh been so small that it would be kind of stupid to have an airfield. I guess it would work better if the maps were much larger. There were lots and lots of airfields during ww2 and it was a major strategic issue. Its just a shame that its not in the game. But again I do see your point about maps been too small.
it would take up a helluvalotta space if you ask me

In other RTS games the air units are always weird. Star Wars galactic battlegrounds and Empire at War has air units and when theyre not being used they just hover around and look stupid. Axis and Allies had an OK airfield where planes took off and landed. Someone above said it right, in real life airfields are WAAAAY in the back behind front lines. Planes can obviously travel fast over great distances so its no biggie to fly from England to France and back. I do agree more use of planes and Luftwaffe would be sweet (bombers) but maybe something more like what they have now where you buy each run. Build and airtower near HQ, for example, and call in planes from that to specific locations. Planes would have to magically appear and then disappear after thier mission. Just like they do in real life. Close air support comes out of nowhere, blows everything up, then leaves post haste.
The way air support is handled in game is fine as it is... and while the intergration of the luftwaffe would add a new dimension to the battlefields; the mechanism through which air suport is called in is fine :D
