It appears that PunkBuster will not be included in the first patch. jRandom - Grant Collier, President of Infinity Ward said this in an email:
Since Infinity Ward is determined to get the current patch out as quickly as possible, Punkbuster will be added to the next one in production.
Read the whole email here at IWNation
Hopefully they will have a windows/linux release for PB at the same time.
Editorial Comment: The comment below speaking about PB in Grant's email really disturbs me.
This will be an optional addition for players, but we expect that certain servers and competitions will make it mandatory.
To me it seems that IW does not know how bad the cheating issue has become. Just as a little background on myself I played competitive Unreal Tournament, then Tribes 2 (not competitively), and then RTCW for 2 years in CAL and TWL. I am also currently a TWL COD admin. As an admin we deal with a lot of things the public does not see, we watch a lot of demos for cheating disputes, and know what to look for. Also on my team we have four TWL admins (not all COD admins) who all know cheating when we see it.
I am afraid that cheating in COD is out of control. It is not only the actual cheating but the lingering doubt when you play that you are never sure if the other team/players were really that good or if they were cheating that is killing COD right now and taking the fun out of it. RTCW had PB and in 2 years of matches, scrims, and pubbing I only thought I encountered a cheater one time. Right now with COD it is the exact opposite and unless I am scrimming a team I have known for a few years or on a pub where I know all the players it I am encountering some cheating or at least suspect that some players are cheating.
In the recent CXG tournament in Las Vegas a player in the COD tournament was caught using a very high intensity setting (to see thru bushes etc). Now this was at a lan, with $45,000 at stake in the COD tourney, with admins walking around the players as they competed. If they risk cheating there, you can be assured that players on teams cheat online when they don't have to worry about an admin standing behind them seeing them cheat.
All you need to do to cheat is change your cvar settings and you can do most of the things the opengl hacks do - ie see thru walls, make player models very very bright etc. I have showed IW some of these exploits and even given them screenshots of them in action.
In talking to other clans I have known for a while they are seeing the same things. One clan I have known for a few years who placed in the top 4 of the ATI/TWL Answer the Call Tournament and who was also at CXG shared with me that they are seeing the same things. They scrim some new team - not in the GotFrag top 10 or a well known team, and they get destroyed. The other team always knows where to expect them around every corner, as well as other cheat related behaviour.
The cheating has become so bad that two of my teammates who are TWL Admins can't stand the cheating anymore and are probably going to wait for PB before coming back to COD.
I am baffled by Grant's Statement because if IW knew how bad the cheating was he would know that every server will run PB, just like it was in RTCW. Basically if a server wasn't running PB you wouldn't play on it.
I know IW is working hard but I hope they get PB out as soon as possible for the sake of the game.
