Hi folks

It seems that the things become worse day after day and I can't quite simply remain without reacting.

One day, I said to Gringo that Wild West is only a game. But I was wrong. Wild West is also a community. And in any community, there are conflicts. It's inevitable. The human being is made like that. Everyone can't share the same point of view on all subject, and it's better thus, because there would be never discussion and nothing would never advance.

We cannot thus prevent the conflicts. No matter what we do. But we can choose the way of managing them. I see three possibilities :

- We can play the ostrich policy. We can run to hide in a cave in the bottom of the world, without woman nor child, nor dog, nor TV, nor computer, and especially without anybody to contradict us. Of couse, that's a way...(I often thought of it but my optimism had always taken the top! lol)

- We can come in this forum and to do what we currently do, i.e. to tear us publicly until the end of time and to wait until somebody else solves our problem in our place. This solution is still worse than the first because it's prejudicial at least for all the community. Why? I will return there later.

- We can take a sit on the table of the negotiations. I.e. to send PM or emails to us, by exposing the facts calmly and nicely, and to try to solve our problems ourselves.

I personally have a clear preference for the third solution. We aren't children anymore and we are all perfectly able to manage the conflicts. And if, in spite of all our efforts, we don't manage to find a compromise, in this case, and ONLY in this case, we will call upon an external mediation. But this call should not be made publicly.

I reconsider the second solution. Of course, we can always ask Hewster to solve our problem. But while Hewster does that, he doesn't do anything else. And I would largely prefer see him writing some lines of code on the mine' s map or another things (Nevermind Hew, I'm sure you do your best) instead of wasting his precious time to solve conflicts which most of the time, result from a misunderstanding.

With regard to the aspect public of the thing, let me give you an example.

Let us suppose that a new player comes and finds this game absolutly fabulous (how could he think differently?). He says: "Woaw I really like this game, I'm gonna make a turn on the forum and see what occurs" Then he comes in the forum, see the mess and thinks :"What a crap here! let see elsewhere if it's not calmer. Pity for the game!" and he goes away.

Of course, this new player could be the last of the morons. In this case, it wouldn't be a large loss (except for him). But he could be an excellent player, with good ideas that he would share with community. It's not impossible. He could be also a great programmer, who could create for Wild West some new maps, or a whole heap of good things to improve the game. It's not impossible either.

He could be a lot of things in fact, but we would never know witch. Result: the new player loses, the game loses, the community loses, everyone loses.

We all knows this : More players, more fun. Less players... We all have our differences. But we all have love for this game and the will to advance it. Then please, let us start from these common points and discuss. We CAN discuss. We're ABLE to discuss. We MUST discuss.

Thank you to have taken time to read me.

BD,

I have some comments I would like to post in response to this. It may take me a day or two to compose my thoughts. Hewster and the WildWest development team have invited me to join them, and I have accepted. My role will primarily be "Player and Server Admin Relations", which I see as trying to moderate player disputes as well as help resolve banning and kicking issues. You make valid points and I will attempt to address them to everyone's satisfaction. Thanks for taking the time to write it up. Ignacio

Especially if that must take 2 days to you to write them, that (still) will be a great lesson for us all (even if you does not have the role "to educate us", I know it very well) [QUOTE=Ignacio] Hewster and the WildWest development team have invited me to join them, and I have accepted. I renew you here my congratulations. Your entry in the development team is largely deserved and I don't have any doubt about your capacities to manage the conflicts as well as possible. I hope that you will informe me about the measurements that you consider. Thank you for all.

Rather than respond to your post point by point, I think I would prefer to outline what I think would be best for players, best for server administrators, and best for The WildWest in general.

For clarification, the WildWest development team members are:

Hewster

Gringo Starr

El Dragon

Capt. Queeg

myself.

First of all, I volunteered to handle the player relations issues for Hewster because, quite simply put, we all recognized that he was rapidly becoming inundated with squabbles and ban/kick situations, and he should be spending his time on more important things, like bug fixes and game enhancements, which we will all benefit from. He also has a personal life, which needs attention, just like the rest of us.

I am not the “Supreme Court” and nobody is under any obligation to contact me for any reason. I merely offer my help when players find themselves in situations where they would like help resolving them. At the same time, any complaints regarding bans, kicks, or other player issues that are sent to the other WW team members will most likely be forwarded on to me to assist with.

Not every conflict needs someone else, an outsider, to resolve it. Some situations are best left to run their course. Inaction is also a form of action. In my opinion, interference in EVERY squabble is not necessary. Having online forum wars really has not resolved anything, and it appears to be counterproductive at best.

Do I, and the other members of the development team, have the ability to kick or ban players from some servers? Yes. Do we WANT to do that? No. Does kicking or banning a player serve a purpose? Maybe.

I say this to quell any fears that anyone may have about me, or anyone else, becoming a ruthless dictator who is ready to ban at the drop of a hat. As far as I am concerned, banning and/or kicking is a last resort to be used when other methods have failed. It does not mean that there are not times when it is appropriate.

I promise every player who contacts me that I will listen to his or her issues, and will respond in some form, as quickly as possible. I will not guarantee that you will like my answers, and my suggestion may be as simple as “wait a few days and see what happens”.

I would like to contact those players that have been affected by recent events on the servers, and see if we can’t put some of the discord behind us and move forward.

Thanks in advance to everyone for their cooperation.

Ignacio
