If the space marine in Doom dies at the end of episode 1 and goes to hell, what happens at the end when he's "too tough for hell to contain"? Does he suddenly get his mortal body back or what?

If you could get the BFG 9000 in the first episode, it would actually be easy to clear out the "death room" the teleporter leads to, ending the first episode.

No it wouldn't, the room kills you anyway.

Hmmm..I guess you're right about that. No amount of cheats seems to be enough, especially since god mode is somehow automatically deactivated and you start taking damage even if you so much as turn on noclip and walk outside the map boundaries.

haha. I've been a fan of doom 1 & 2 since around 1994/5 and I never realised that you actually DIE and go to hell at the end of the first episode. I just thought you kicked everyone's ass, but they wanted it to look more intense so they teleported you to a demon filled room where you ALMOST die, hence the usual 7% health left.... Oh man. How dumbshit am I. ho ho. (You don't have to answer that, btw)

Don't feel bad. The truth is I didn't know it either until I read about it on Wikipedia. That's what prompted me to post this.

Yeah, it's supposed to be that you "die" and so go to Hell to continue the fight. Other "theories" that I have heard on the matter is that the Death Room is just to show how hard and dangerous the actual teleportation to Hell is. Since the Doom Marine teleported to Hell, I'd assume that he kept his body, otherwise, he wouldn't be able to really "die" in Hell, now would he? Unless you say his soul dies or something...

Ohhh I think I may have figured it out. The marine never actually dies. In both Doom 3 and the original Doom, military "volunteers" passing through the portals ended up going insane which is because they literally went through hell before reaching the other side. In the case of our little marine guy, he didn't go insane for the same reason he doesn't turn into a zombie: He's too tough or whatever. That's beside the point though. The portal didn't actually lead to hell. It had always lead to the Deimos base, only now the Deimos base was hovering above hell, which is why you are said to be at "The Shores of Hell."
