For all who dont knowwhat bump-mapping is its a trick on your eyes, its atechniqe to make flat textures (metal grate) look like it has depth and "bumpyness" heres a example of something with a bumpmapp and one with out: with with out:
the eye thinks the bumps have depth but in reality they are flat, this saves alot of system resourses and is better than modeling all of the bumps. Almost EVERY texture in doom 3 will be bump-mapped, about 90% which gives everything a 3d look, even the guns are bump-mapped, and another game gives a great example of this. Far cry (with all settings maxed) makes extensive use of bump mapping (not as much as doom 3 but still alot) and has the most bumpmaps in a relesed game to date (halo had a little but not enough). after building a new system i was able to max out ALL the settings (along with max af) by keeping my rez down too 800x600 (which is all i need, i dont really care for using high rezzes) and i was playing in some of the inner levels and i was just awe inspired by some of the visuals, here are some:
well thats all i got (so far) i would like to encourage yhose who have really good pics that show exalant bumpmapping to post your pics And soon i will have pics from doom 3 so we can compare far cry's and doom 3's bump mapping. also these were made with a nvidia card with BETA 61.45 drivers
p.s. yes there is a thread almost like this in the far cry forum if you have seen both and were wondering.
Thanks much Skrewb, an excellent thread :D . I have indeed seen such cases in Far Cry, and the areas which hold my interest most, visually, are where a light source shines off of a surface, be it metal or concrete. It creates a spectacularly realistic effect when you sidestep around the source of the reflection. This will be a primary source for comparing various games having extended use of bumpmapping technology with Doom 3...visually that is, so please, everyone, contribute your best game samples to this thread (screenshots of course). Happy hunting :D
And do us a big favor please, DO NOT quote Skrewb's first post here, because each such quote will have a repeat of EVERY picture he has posted for initial reference, taking up huge and unnecessary amounts of space.
ok heres a example of doom 3's bump mapping,
the tiles, monters, sink, walls, and some other decals are ALL are/have flat textures, but are bump-mapped if they wernt every thing would look flat and not so shiny, heres another example:
same as the other pic the walls are flat textures but apper 3d via bump-mapping, but the marine is a combanation of 3d modeling and bump mapping, but most if not all those machanical parts near the neck are flat bump-mapped textures
and the marine is holding the gun in his left had, but in all the video's he shoots with his right hand.
The awe-inspiring capabilites of modern GPU's and game graphics designers (specifically id :naughty: ) never cease to amaze. The rigid texures of the Imp's epidermis are once again quite amazing, but I find the pock-marked skin of the zombie in the second image to be particularly impressive.
the imps skin is moslty modeld i think cause his bumps can be seen from the side, but most of his textures are bump-mapped. its weird how id was able to make this good of graphics and produce good frame rates on yester-year's hardware, when far cry needs top of the line stuf to make the same quality.
Very good point :nodding: . The Imp, being a demon, obviously requires much more extensive bumpmapping. I think though that the reason that id was capable of such a feat at that time was due to the fact that it recieves every new graphics processing board as soon as it's development reaches completion (before it is released on the market). When the GeForce 3 came out, the id Software team had already taken full advantage of it's capabilites, while the rest of us along the mainstream (namely, people uninvolved in the game industry), made due with much lower-end hardware. But of course, every new generation of graphics technology that John Carmack creates pushes PC hardware to it's very limits and serves as a raise in the bar of the industry. :bows:
to quote carmack, "the video card devs will just hafto keep up"
I THINK that you are al wrong. DOOM 3 will have Normal Maps (which are better than Bumb Maps). AT least Half Life 2 will, i'd be amazed if ID didn't use Normal Maps.
omg dont tell me thats what doom3 graphics look like..
what do you meen sid? if your refering to the imps skin looking pixel lated, its a old pic the bst examples are from the videos, and yes doom 3 will use bump-mapped textures witch are better than normal textures, i really dont think you understand what bump-mapping is, if you wach the video and look at some screenies you will se there bump-mapped (like one of my posts with the pinky)
