Basically, I want to narrow the cone of fire on the shotgun a bit, so it's not so scattered and actually useful beyond a five foot range.

I unpacked the pak000.pk4 file using WinZip and went into the "def" folder using notepad to narrow the spread setting from "22" to "10" under the weapon_shotgun file. I then saved it, rezipped it and returned it to it's original *.pk4 form.

The problem is, now doom3 won't load with it. I replaced the modified pk4 file with the original pk4 and the game works again. what did I do wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

No. Once I was done modifying, everything was returned to it's original format. The only time the winzip icon was on screen was when I renamed the pak000.pk4 to pak000.zip. I then unpacked the zipfile (as "pak000"), made the change in the shotgun's attribute file from "22" to "10" and then saved the file. I then used winzip to convert the entire folder back into "pak000.zip". Once that was done, I renamed the file pak000.pk4 and it returned to it's original pak file form. unfortunatly, Doom 3 would not startup. To troubleshoot, I cut the modified pak000.pk4 and replaced it with the original pak000.pk4 and then doom would start just fine.

well put the pk4 in a folder called Shotgun spread. Then in that make a txt document called Description.txt in it put Shotgun Spread. and then load Doom 3 and look in the mods menu. It should work. Happy modding, -Spunky
