This tutorial will teach you how to make your own custom pda file with your name in it.:)

Table of Contents

 • Introduction
 • Tools/files
 • Step 1
 • Step 2
 • Step 3
 • Step 4

INTRODUCTION: PDA’s are used throughout the game to document an npc’s log, email, and video that he/she documented before their untimely death. PDA’s contain the names of the npcs the title, where they are posted, id, and security level.

TOOLS/FILES

Here is a list of tools and files we will need/use to make our own custom PDA:

-A .PK4 explorer preferably “PakScape” which can be found at d3files in the utilities section

-A text editor ex: wordpad, notepad, Microsoft word(Needed for the pda.def file)

-We will be using files from your base directory of your doom3 directory: pak000.pk4, pak003.pk4 and we will be creating our own .pk4 file.

-.OGG creator/opener Goldwave is the best. Search for it at google

-A simple microphone( so we can record our voice into the pda

-We will also use the gtkradient editor that is built in to the doom3 game NOTE: If you do not know what this is then you must look it up and how to use it, because it is vital in getting it in the game.

STEP 1: CREATING OUR PK4 FILE

Open up PakScape or your preferred pk4 explorer and click on New(CTRL + N).

We will worry about what to name it later.

In the space next to the margin, right click and select Object/New Directory. Name that directory newpdas, this is where we will stick our .pda file.

Now repeat the process and label the new directory sound. Open the sound directory, right click in the open space and select Object/New Directory, we will name this folder VO. Then go in side the VO folder and right click, select Object/New Directory we will name this folder audio_logs, this is where we will stick our .ogg file.

STEP 2: CUSTOMISING THE .PDA FILE

First we will open an existing .pda file to use as a template for our custom .pda file.

Go into your C:/Program Files/Doom 3/Base directory if that is where it is located and open up the pak000.pk4 with PakScape, go to the folder newpdas. For the sake of this tutorial we will use, admin_banks.pda. Double click on the file admin_banks.pda and when it says open with, open it with wordpad/notepad or the text editor of your choice.

You’ll notice right away the layout. This is will be the reference file that the game uses to give us our custom pda. The first step in customizing our pda file is the file name, which is the first thing under the //’s. We will change pda admin_banks to pda my_pda. Then we will change where the name field says “William Banks” to “ My PDA” with the quotes. We will change the fullname field which says “William L. Banks” to “My First PDA”. Leave the icon field alone as it does not matter what it looks like. You can change the id field from “9134-21” to whatever you want. We will change the post field where it says “Administration” to “Testing” with quotes. We will change the title field where it says “Director” to “Tester” with quotes. Leave the security field alone as it does not matter what it is. (In the future if you want to set the security level to what you want it to be you may).

Ok now, the next part requires that you follow very specifically as it will be using paths to point to files and entries so missing one letter could cause it not to work.

Under the security field you will see 5 fields pda_email X3 and pda_audio X2. The pda_email field refers to the email message the owner of the pda has received, we will delete 2 of the pda_email fields. You can delete which ever ones you like as we only need one to tablet for our custom email. The pda_audio field refers to the audio entry which contains the sound file of the npc’s audio log. Delete one of the pda_audio fields as we will only need one of these.

Now we will customize the fields. Rename the pda_email field where it says “admin_banks_email_1” to “my_pda_email_1”. Rename the pda_audio field where it says “admin_banks_audio_1” to “my_pda_audio_1”. If you scroll down a bit you should see the entries of the emails and the audios. Delete the two entries of the emails as well as the one of the audio, but they have to be the have the names of the references you deleted just before.

Ok now we will customize the entries. Where it says email admin_banks_email_1, rename it to email my_pda_email_1. Notice under the field text there are several lines in quotes that end with /n/n. The /n/n is vital as it tells the code to end line and will start a new one with the next text. We will delete lines 2, 3, and 4 here and change the text of line 1 (without deleting or adding quotations or the /n/n) to “Hi, hows it going”.

Now we will customize the audio entry. Change where it says audio admin_banks_audio_1 to audio my_pda_audio_1. Change where it says name “Missing Personnel” to “My Audio” with quotes. Where it says audio “audiolog_admin_banks_1”, Change it to “audiolog_my_pda_1” with quotes.

Ok now that is it for the .pda file. Save it to a directory on your hard disk like “My Documents” as my_pda. Now go into Pakscape, and in your new pk4 in the newpdas directory right click and go to Object/Import File, select your .pda file. Now we are done with step 2. Few

STEP 3: YOUR AUDIO FILE

Go into goldwave and click new. Record your audio file saying whatever you want, ex:”testing testing 1 2 3”. Click save as, and under file extention use .OGG and save it as my_pda_audio. Put the file in your custom pk4 in the sound/vo/audio_logs directory. Now you must open the pak003.pk4 file with pakscape. Click on the Sound directory. Scroll down and you should see a file called audiologs.sndshd. Open this with any text editor, scroll to the very bottom and copy the last entry then click the very bottom and paste it.

Now we will edit the fields to use the sound file we want. In your copied entry, change where it says audiolog_site3_rogers_1 to audiolog_my_pda_1. This will be the path for our .pda file to reference to. Now change where it says sound/vo/audio_logs/site3_01_PierceRogers.wav to sound/vo/audio_logs/my_pda_audio.wav. Even though the file is a .ogg it will be labled as a .wav here.

Save the file to you’re “My Documents” folder on your hard disk and then drag it to your sound directory in your pk4. Now save your pk4 as pak008.pk4 make sure in the file extension you select pk3. But you must use the name pak008.pk4 or it will label it as a pk3.

STEP 4: GETTING IT IN THE GAME

Start up Doom 3 and when you get to the main menu pres ctrl+alt+~ to get to the editor. Once in the editor make a small room, use one of the room tutorials if you must. And right click on the grid section and go down to pda/pda_marscity_char_maint_asian_pda. Move it to the ground and where you want it to be picked up. Repeat this process because you will need two, one when you pick it up will be your personal pda the other will be our custom pda. With the second pda still selected, pres crtl+N you will see a window come up with the tab selected entity. In the key field type pda_name and in the Val field type my_pda, then hit enter.

Save your map, Bsp it, then hit F2 to get back to the game. Bring up the console(ctrl+alt+~) type map “yourmapname” and when you get in, select the first pda we created or else you wont get the audio, and then pick up the second one where we edited the fields. Hit TAB and select My PDA, and play the audio file.

If you're in a hurry just type editpdas in the doom3 console to use the inbuilt editor. But I prefer to write mine in the def files too :bows:

Actually, the editpdas is a good way to get your custom pda started. However it will not allow you to edit the audio or video logs of that person as well as create new ones. This tutorial helps you through that. Thanks for the compliments people!:)

My question don't fit exactly, but is about the pda, too. :) I want to change the look of the pda, where can I find the files that define the look of the pda?

the look of the pda is defined by the gui. You can do this in the editor.:)
