I have a problem with Doom 3 randomly crashing, at least when playing mods. I haven't played the original game in a while but I've played mods recently and the game randomly crashes. I can't figure out what the cause is. The mods I've been playing recently are Event Horizon and Z-Hunters

System specs: AMD Athlon XP 3700+ Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS 512 MB 2 gb PC3200 DDR ram Windows XP SP2 500 GB Sata HD & 160 GB 7200RPM HD Creative X-Fi

I've tried running the game at different settings but nothing seems to fix it. All drivers are the most recent versions, and Doom 3 is updated to 1.3.1,

have you reinstalled the game completely? Most likely you are missing something important in the base file. try it, and see what happens. if it still does it, your PC is screwed, sorry to say...

I would check to see that patch the mods take. A lot of them wont work with the 1.3.1 version of d3 for various reasons. If they do require only 1.3.0 then you will have to uninstall and reinstall making sure to use the 1.3.0 patch or check the d-load section for something that might help. Also try the orginal game to make sure that it isn't a corrupt game file.

I know what is the problem, i am 99% sure !!!

Make backups first !!!

Then, go to D3 directory and do a recursive search of all the files starting in Doomconfig*.cfg, remove all of them and then do the same for the Autoexec*.cfg and remove all of them also.

After that, re-run your D3 legal copy, that of course have to be patched with at least v1.3.0 or v1.3.1 patch and all will be fine, ok ! :)

Some things in D3 configs that can make D3 to crash are...:

r_useIndexBuffers 1 // this has to be 0

r_useVertexBuffers 0 // has to be 1

image_useCache 1 // Better gfx with 0 and also it can crash D3 if it is set to 1 and two other image_xxx cvars are badly set as they are by default !!!

Remember, if you don't know what you are doing, don't try this at home !!! :D
