I've read about, and tried this tweak, but I don't think the instructions I got were good enough for a layman like me to understand, or poorly written. I DID use Winrar, and deleted out all the original zipped pk4s. I believe the instructions said to name the new files same as the originals, which may be where the error occurred. I get a "could not load the default config" error message, when the games tries to load. Can someone please tell me how to do it properly, and does it only make levels load quicker, or does it improve gameplay as well. I've read recently that it's supposed to smooth out the spots that have a delay effect, where huge texture files load. Thanks:lookaround:

ok, what you do is, unpack all the pk4's into the base directory. do not rename anything or move anything, everything should remain as it is and in the base directory. then either move or delete the pk4's (i suggest moving them, otherwise, if something goes wrong youl have to reinstall the game.) once everything is extracted, run the game as usual and it should work. I have noticed an decrease in load times by doing this and i have a faster running game too hope this helps

OK, Lab Rat, I'll give it another go, but it seems to me that's the way I did it the first time. I also, moved the originals to a Temp folder as well. One thing I don't understand, is that I've read the original files are supposed to be labeled with a .cfg at the end, and possibly .pk4.cfg. Mine just say pak000, pak001, etc. I may be confusing articles I've read though, as some deal specifically with cfg tweaks. If I get the same error again, I'll show you a screenshot of it. Do you suppose you could show me a screen of how your unzipped folders look in your Base after after unzipping them? One last thing, do I unzip ALL the pk4s, including the game00 file, or just pak000-pak005? I may have corrupted the files before the first attempt, when I tried to open them with GetDiz, by mistake, which specializes in DIZ, and NFO files. The files would not respond at all as with Notepad, after using GetDiz. I have since reinstalled the game, so everthing is new except for the saves and config. For now, I'm enjoying playing through the Nightmare level, and am about a third of the way through. It's alot easier so far than I thought it would be, as I've worked my way up through difficulty levels, primarily to devise a way of playing without getting injured, specifically for this level. I was shocked at first, when they let your health run down to 25%, at the rate of about 5% every few seconds. When I heard the "Use us!", chant of the Soul Cube souls however, I was confident I could make it through. Nice to have that weapon all the way through the game, or at least I assume so.

yeh its a bit of a pain your health goes down but i suppose its all in the aid of difficulty. yep extract all the pk4's. the labels are possibly hidden because you may have already specified a default program to open the files with. so a cfg file may be opened in notepad, but if you tell windows to always use notepad it usually hides the .cfg extension. i dont know how to put screenshots on here so if you or someone else, could tell me how to do it, il put a screenshot of how my base folder looks

do they have an icon such as a winrar icon? or is just a blank file icon (a windows symbol) in any case, they should still open with winrar, open them with it, and drag the contents to the base folder

I think they were just plain looking Windows type folders, but I did use Winrar to unzip them, and as far as I remember, I designated the location for them to be extracted to, rather than dragging. The zipped folders do look like the Winrar icon though, once it's used to unzip a file, they all take on that look. I think I'll finish up playing through the nightmare mode to the end, before I attempt it. I'm a little over half way through, and I haven't even used the Soulcube that much. I have played several parts over from save points though, the strategy is quite different with nightmare. BTW, I've succsessfully loaded a screenshot, that's at the bottom of the last page of the screenshots thread. It's only an attachment, so it's got the ugly border around it, and I forgot I'd left it in thumbnail size, but it expands with a click. I 've looked through half of the screens on that thread, and nobody loads thumbs. They are a nice compromise between space and convenience though. When you get to a post with several photo attachment links, it's easy to forget which was the last you clicked on. Here's a link to a great freeware tool I got from the freeware-guide.com site, it's called FastStone Image Viewer. It has lots of features, including file conversion, is fairly easy to use, and renders excellent pics. If you take a screenshot of Doom 3 for instance, a common way to view it is via Windows Media Player, which converts it to TGA, problem is, they end up being about 2.3 MB, and the attachment loader on this forum only allows up to 2MB video files. It also doesn't allow TGA files. After converting it to jpeg with FastStone, it's only about 54 KB now, and looks just as good! Then you just click on the attachments tab at the bottom of the post page, and it opens up a box with several spaces for loading different attachments, each can be located easily with the browse button On the previous forum I participated in, I got spoiled by the easy method by which you could load multiple free images, with text in between, without even typing in it's URL. There was a "upload photo" tab at the top of the page, which opened a browse window. Once the image was opened, it showed it's URL in bold type, and you could just copy and paste it into the "insert image" box (opened via the little yellow pic icon in the advaced mode). At least this forum defaults to the Enhanced Interface, in the misc edit options, which shows all the image tweaking stuff (if you hit the advanced tab at the bottom)Here's that URL: http://www.freeware-guide.com/dir/mmedia/imagedit.html If you need any more help uploading screens, let me know. Although on this forum, I'm not exactly the best one to ask.
