WELCOME! Join me on my journey into map making.

Well, they've done it. They've convinced me to have a go at WildWest map making. IF only they knew what they were getting into! I'm gonna have LOTS of questions! So, I figure why not share the grief - ahem - the experience with the rest of the world.

Now, I've never done ANY mapping before and am hanging on for dear life. For instance. I've just been told that I need to make my client un-pure. I don't know what that means and if it is even legal in Ohio, USA. I'm pretty sure I've read something about some arrests related to this in a small town in Pennsylvania... but that's beside the point.

I'll use this forum to keep you up to date with what I'm learning and will ask some questions here too. I encourage others to do the same. Hey, if we can get three or even 5 newbies (like me) learning how to map and sharing our experience along the way, by Christmas we can double the number of maps available for Wild West! How awesome would that be!

Remember this isn't my thread but one for everyone (no matter what level of skill) to post mapping questions in. If there is a really advanced question "I want to make a trigger that fire a script that animates a skeleton with a ROQ on it's belly but my client says it's too pure to even think of doing such a thing!" (I don't know!) Post it here, and it will make sense to the rest of us eventually and we can come back and reread the answer when we're ready to understand it.

Well this intro is long enough, I'll make another posting with my experiences so far...

Well, I started this journey by trying to find the tool that is used to do these maps. I found LOTS of them. I tried two first off geradiant (G E Radiant) and then Recent Software's 3DE. GERadiant I think was actually for mainly Half-life maps and would never work. 3DE came close to working but was never quite right. I don't know if it was because I didn't have all the textures yet or because I messed something up setting wise.

In any case I found out a couple things from a gent named Gringo Starr - You've probably seen him around. He's working on a map too.

Anyway I now know that the standard way to create maps for WildWest is to download the program GTK Radiant. It's by the same people who did QE radiant. Right now it is available here: GTK Radiant downloads but don't hold me to that. Links change and all that.

Next you need to download the Radiant map pak that Hewster put together. I'll put that up in a later post or if it gets taken down for some reason PM one of us and we'll send it to you.

There's some read me files in that archive and I just followed those. That got me up and running and looking at maps with bunches of lines and blocks and diamonds and such. I'm learning what all those mean and how to move about right now.

Now to get that MAP pak, Check out the following posts...

OK, here is the file. There is a 300k limit per post attachment that I need to work within. I've reread the forum rules to make certain posting the mapping pak doesn't violate any posted bylaws or the spirit thereof and all looks good. Size is not mentioned at all only content. So all looks good.

This file is a multi-part archive version of Hewster's radiant Mapping Pak. It's in 9 parts. The first one is a .Zip file and then .z01 .z02 up to .z08. Put all those files into the same directory and open it with WinZip or the archiver of your choice. Most archivers will handle multi file archives fine but some utilities that add unzipping as a secondary feature (ZTree for instance) may not. Part 1 of 9 is attached to the next posting.

I've added an extra readme file Hewster's archive to clarify that it is split into multiple pieces and to refer people back to this mapping forum (not this thread). The contents follow...

___________________________ Greetins and salutations, Friend!

So you're new to these parts are ye? Well, this here archive file is just one of NINE amigos that you'll need to get yer WildWest map making off to a rip-roarin start. Put all 9 pieces in one directory and open only the .zip file. You'll notice that ther be paths stored in the file. You need to unzip all this to your WildWest directory with paths intact. Now, that should just be how yer zip program works so don't go an' work yerself up into a tizzy.

In my case, I had ta extract all the files ta here: C:\Program Files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Game of The Year Edition\WildWest\

After that I had a whole herd a new directories created all automatic like. They looked like this here: C:\Program Files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Game of The Year Edition\WildWest\Maps C:\Program Files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Game of The Year Edition\WildWest\Models C:\Program Files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Game of The Year Edition\WildWest\Scripts C:\Program Files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Game of The Year Edition\WildWest\Textures

If yer seein anythin' about replacing files, just go ahead and do it. Coz that's just the way things are.

Now, once you've wrastled all of these varments into place, have a gander at "Setting up Radiant for the WildWest.htm" right thar in the WildWest directory. You see, this here stuff expects you to have somethin called "GTK Radiant" somewhere in yer saddle bag and this tells ya all you gotta do to get it all workin out here in the WildWest.

Rumor has it: all this was put together by one of them thar smart city folk named Hewster. He hangs out with this here other genteel feller named BoltyBoy and I expect he had his hand in it too. So - I don't wanna be accused of claim jumpin'. I'm just tryin' to share the wealth a little, as they say in the city.

See, I had to break Hewster's stash up into smaller chunks just to get it through the door of the "RTCW Files.Com - WildWest Mapping forum" general store. You know - the one at http://www.gamingforums.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=253

So, if you have only the .zip part of this here file and one of the a z01..z08 parts is missing, just go there to get the rest. And look around, ya might lern a thing 'er two.

Well, I'll be seein ya later,

Capt. Queeg.

This here is the first part of the map pack.

The attached file is the only one that has its correct extension. Since the forum insists that ZIP files have a .ZIP extension, you'll have to be sure to name the files correctly as they are saved. Each post clearly states the file name to use and it is ONLY the extension that is changing.

When you are done downloading all of the peices, you should have the following files in one directory: WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.zip WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z01 WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z02 WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z03 WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z04 WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z05 WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z06 WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z07 WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z08

Then as I stated earlier, just open the .Zip file.

OK here is the second part of the map pack.

This file should be saved into the same directory as the main WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.zip file.

This file should be named WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z01

ATTENTION: When you save the file USE THE EXTENSION .Z01 or just copy & paste the file name from the next line: WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.z01

Remember 1. Make sure that you save it as WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.Z01 not WildWest_Radiant_Pak_SplitUp.Z01.Zip To do this you may need to change the file filter from "Zip files" to "All files". This is a common MS bug - though they'll say they are just looking out for you. 2. The file sizes must be 290 KB. You'll see this on the Download Complete confirmation message. If it is not right redownload it. This seems to be a forum bug. I test downloaded all of these and two of the files were truncated on my first try. One of those I had to download 2 more times to get it to be right. If you get any CRC errors when uncompressing the files - look for the file that is not the right size. The .Zip file is 170kb all the rest are 290kb. After all of these were the correct size, I was able to uncompress the files successfully.
