Well I'm in the process of creating a fort map based on the Hacienda map. Things aren't going too bad at all, there's a few things I need to iron out but the base is there.
I'm thinking of putting a cannon in on this map to blow some doors open, but, I don't have a clue on how I would go about making a cannon and blowing the doors. Any help here would be much appreciated. I don't want to start going into how many people it would take to load the cannon as i'm thinking on the lines of a small horse drawn cannon thats already loaded and can only fire once.
Other things i'm wanting help with are breakable barrels, bottles, chairs, and tables, a large rock oh and windows. I have a few suprises in store, one of which involves the well.
I'm hoping with any luck i'll have some screen shots of how things are looking by the end of next week. You won't recognise the map with the changes. Different spawn points, new buildings, some new items, some old buildings opened up and some secret areas.
At the moment i'm concentrating on the outside of the buildings and the landscape, all of which is going very well. Two of the towers are already up and running and looking good. Some of you may have noticed that i've been running the old Amigo's server to test things out, so far so good. Who knows we may yet have another map to have a go at by the end of next month.
So, you got the mappin bug too now huh ? I feel for your X19, its not gona get anymore love now ;) hehe
You're at the begining of a long road, full of pit-falls and wrongly signed sign-posts, but with some beutiful sceanary along the way, not to mention the Emerald city at the end :D
As for a canon, I was thinking of creating an Canon entity for uses such as you describe, this would be placed similar to how one places the mounted Gatling gun in the game. I would also need to create a new spawnflag for func_exlosives, so that only a canon can distruct a wall ect (otherwise you may be able to blow with TNT !)
Of course it is possible to script what you want here, but if others think it would be a good idea I'll take the time and create this canon entity (along with a nice model) ;)
Will the miner have to light the cannon with matches?
Aye up Hewster,
Yep that mapping bug has got me good and proper. I'm hooked! Well i've done some playing about with the Hacienda map and already made some mistakes, most of which i've rectified. What i've been doing is finding out where I went wrong and how. I've a lot to learn yet so i'm expecting to find those pit falls as I go along. All part of the learning curve I suppose. I think the finished map will be well worth the headaches and late nights.:D
As for the X1/9, well I was thinking of selling her. The old bones are suffering with the cold and damp in keeping up with her so it's time for her to find a new home. :(
If you could create a cannon that would be great, I do honestly think it is a bit ambitious for me to create something like that at this early stage but any help would be much appreciated.
I was thinking on the lines of the miner lighting the cannon as, after all, he does have the tools to perform the action. I think for other classes to light the cannon would involve a lot of changes to the actual class models.
Before I forget I've sent Bolty an e-mail asking him if it's ok for me to go ahead and use the Hacienda map as a base. Last thing I want to do is step on any toes.:)
Well this is how things are looking still got a long way to get yet.
and the another couple of shots including the bottom of the well. I'm not showing where it leads to though, that you'll have to find out yourself when it's finished. Needless to say you'll have to find the entrance first so you can perform a suprise attack!
There's still the roof's to put on the towers and the well to finish. I've already done the observation platforms around the fort itself, i've just the breakable posts to put in. Last shot for the moment, this is inside the tower. I've opened the floor up so you can now drop through, it just needs some oil lamps and lighting and a few decorations.
WOW! That's really coming along. Maybe I should quit what I'm doing and work on a more sane map. I've working on a what I've been calling a puzzle map. A Temple of Doom sort of thing... trying weird stuff out. Teams spawning at two separate points rushing together to the same goal but completing obtacles on one side, reinstates the obtacle on the other side. Haven't got too far on it though...
I really like the look of the fort in that first shot. I like the darker wood. It really stands out againts the sand. I'm not great with making textures but is it possible to add a 3d curved look to that texture so that instead of planks, they are tree trunks? Straw an mud packed at the edge of the texture could make the trunks vary in width... Could add some character in certain areas...
I like the sounds of that Captain. Keep at it. The only reason I used the Hacienda map was because a lot of the base was there, and with me not being of the patient type I wanted somthing quick to complete, eg. within the space of a couple of months. Thing is now though i've some doubts at to the texture on the towers. Looking through the net at Texas forts i've found most of them were built of sandstone in the late 1800's. I tried another idea with the textures and came up with this. I think this captures the period better than the dark wood. I would like to have a 3D log effect but that alone would take some time to reproduce. What do you think to the map now i've changed the finish on the buildings? Some of the smaller ones will be still in the dark wood. I should have some shots of the opened up rooms before long, some of which are looking goooood.:D
