One player lagging everyone else -1 reply

How can I find a definitive answer to the question of whether or not one player with a high ping will cause all the other players to lag? I find dozens of references to this in different forums. There are 2 opinions, the technical group usually says that it does not make any difference how high their ping is, it should only affect THEIR gameplay, not everyone elses, except for the lagged player jumping all over the screen. The other group says "I don't care what the techies say, I know what I saw, and we were not lagged until that player came on the server, and after he left, things went back to normal." Where can I go to get a straight answer on this? Is there someone at Activision or ID we can ask? I keep seeing kick votes for this reason, and I am not convinced that it is necessary. If we find that it IS true, then we need to configure the servers with a max ping setting to prevent this from happening. What say you all? Ig

See my answer in the general forum. I believe that under normal circumstances, the answer is a big NO, But if the player with high ping is acctually flooding the server somehow (one way to-do with is make an app that constantly asks the server for its info.. basically what a browser does when you click re-fresh) This would give him a large ping, and may effect the connection to all other players, since it may be soaking up lots of the servers bandwidth. If I were to ask about this, I think I might post on the quake3world technical forums, where some of the ID programmers hang out :) Huey
