If I have 3ds Max and all the exporters and everything I need to create a model... acn I make a new one from scratch, or would I still need to import an existing model as a base?

no, i think you can start from srcatch getting the model to work though the OE then AE is a pain in the ass for first timers tho,
Yh of course you can, but if your a bigginer i wouldnt recomend it, purely becuase of bones and markers. i mean you can do it with help from tuts.
I suggest getting a relic model and modifying it, its much easier
less work and more explosions

trust me, I am no beginer at this, I'm just having problems with homemade buildings. I can export shipped models just fine, but any I create are a hassle. I'd really apreciate a quick setup reference guide thing, or anything else will do.
