ok just a couple questions about modding: Q1) i have heard ppl use 3ds max for modding but since im cheap i got gmax instead (some free type of 3ds max) can i mod with gmax? Q2) how do i make new squades and modles etc. Q3) last question, why most of the time when i make a map using stuff from the winter assault (its only work like twice) it says Fatal AI Error when i try to play them. all help appreciated
1) No, you can't model with GMax at the moment. There's a team (who I'm helping a little, as I've investigated various file formats a lot) who are trying to make a GMax exporter, but it's unofficial and it has only fairly recently started.
2) To make models you need to model them and export them, set them up in the Object Editor and then use them. To add new squads you need to add an SBPS for the unit and an EBPS for the troopers through the Attribute Editor, and then make them buildable at a building.
3) Not a clue. I've never heard of any AI errors caused by maps. What does it show if you bring up the console? (normally Ctrl+Shift+@ I think, or possibly ~) I'm not promising it'll say anything, as AI doesn't always debug, but it might.
Your best bet, though, is to try the Relic Dev Network Wiki as it has lots of tutorials for the various tools on there.
You can model in Gmax, but you cant export. However there is a script for Gmax that allows you to export into a format that 3ds Max reads, which can then be exported into the relevant file type, but that means alot of fiddiling around. And so i guess you still need max.
EDIT: Woops, just realised my post virtually went round in circles and said nothing *slaps head*
Now that i Think about it , the map problem may be SCAR error
SCAR errors should (probably) contain a bit of information at the console. When it occurs, have a look and see if it says anything important.
