FAQ

Recently on these forums, the same questions have been coming up again and again. So, I decided to create a FAQ. This will be updated as time goes on.

Q1) Where do I get a copy of the modtools from? A1) You can download them for free here: http://dawnofwar.filefront.com/file/Dawn_of_War_Mod_Tools;51556

Q2) How do I make my own maps? A2) Use the Mission Editor inside the mod tools folder. (download link above)

Q3) I have made my map, and it’s great, but I don’t know where to save it! A3) All maps must be saved to: Multi player maps go: C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\W40k\Data\scenarios\mp Single player maps go: C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\W40k\Data\scenarios\sp OR C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\WXP\Data\scenarios\mp C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\WXP\Data\scenarios\sp

Q4) Now my map doesn’t have all the textures/decals or objects that it did when I saved it! A4) Make sure if you use models/textures from the WA folder, that you then save your map in C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\WXP\Data\scenarios\mp OR (for single player maps) C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\WXP\Data\scenarios\sp

Q5)Why are objects not showing up in the map I created? “Not the purple box of doom issue” A5) The objects have probably been assigned to a player which isn’t in the game. For example: You’ve added a wall assigned to player 3 but it is only a 2 player map. Objects should be assigned to the world.

Q6) Why are objects disappearing when a teammate gets killed? A6) For the very same reason as above. You have assigned the objects to be player controlled, and so when that player dies, the objects will disappear with him.

Q7) Can I extract models from in game for my own use? A7) Yes! Get yourself a copy of Brother Santos’ tools, available here: http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=76791 You have to be registered on Relic forums to have access to this page.

Q8) Why isn't Win95, 98, and Me supported for the Mod tools? A8) Simply put, they just are not. Sorry, but they aren’t. Nothing anyone can do about it.

Q9) How do I create my own models? A9) Get yourself a copy of 3dsmax. This is the only 3d software that DoW is compatible with. Unfortunately, it is very expensive, and can set you back a whopping $3500!

Q10) Why won’t the badges and banners I’ve downloaded/created work? A10) All badges need to be saved in: C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\Badges and all banners go in: C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\Banners. Also, check that the badges and banners are in the right format (.tga), just make sure that when you extract your badges and banners, make sure that they don't go into a subfolder by mistake (eg DoW\banners\bannners)

Q11) I have downloaded some new skins, but they wont show up in game! Help? A11) Put all skins in C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\W40k\Data\art\ebps\races\race_name\texture_share, so for example, for a space marine skin, it would go in: C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\W40k\Data\art\ebps\races\space_marines\texture_share.

Q12) Is it possible to have two or more textures for the same race? I want only one chapter to have this skin, not all of them! A12) If you use a texture, this texture applies to the whole race, not just a specific army. So if you use the Black Templars texture, for example, you will have the litanies on all your space marine armies. The only way to stop this is to have a separate mod, and have them as a new race. Keep all the stats the same, but you will then have them having the new textures, and the space marines will have the default textures.

Q13) Where can I download the …… mod? A13) Most mods can be found on www.doWfiles.com If a mod isn't there, it can either be found on Relic forums, or on the peronal website of that mod team.

Q14) The file I downloaded is in .zip/.rar format! How do I open it?/SIZE] A14) Download a copy of Winrar (www.winrar.com) This will open all formats. There is a free 30 day trial, which when it expires only comes up with a warning, but you can carry on. After all the good work they do it’s only good and fair to pay for the full version.

Q15) I’ve just download the fantastic new …… mod! But I can’t install it! What do I do? A15) If the mod comes with an .exe installer, just click it and it will auto-install in the correct locations. If it doesn’t have an .exe, follow the instructions included with in the read-me.

Q16) Right, I’ve installed it, in the correct location, but it doesn’t show up in the Game manager! What’s wrong? A16) One of two things may have gone wrong here. Either: # the mod you have downloaded is of an earlier version of DoW/WA v1.41, and so isn’t compatible. Search for a more recent version of the mod. If there is none, then you will have to sit an wait for one to be released. Alternatively, reinstall DoW, and patch up to the same level as the mod.

OR

# your game is not at v1.41. Patch it using the Multiplayer button, and then autopatch up to 1.41. WA patches up to v1.4 automatically.

Q17) How do I create a new thread? A17) IBBoard recently answered this question, and I can’t put it any better than what he wrote, so this is his answer: ‘It'll depend on the skin you're using, but go to forum (e.g. http://forums.filefront.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1015 for this forum) and above the topic list in the FileFront skin is a "New Thread" button (same color, style and position as the "post reply" button in this thread). Click it and you get to make a new thread. Different skins might be slightly different (different text, right side instead of left side, whatever) but they should all still have a similar button above and below the forum list - it's just standard interface’

Q18) I am trying to do ...... using the mod tools. How do I do it? Is there any tutorials out there for me? A18) The first most obvious place to look would be on the RDN wiki at www.relic.com/rdn/wiki This should cover most of the things you need. If it doesn't, try asking someone in the modding section of relic forums. This is the hangout for all the modders, and someone out there will know your problem and will be able to come up with a solution. Often though, the answer given is very similar 'read the wiki', as it is in most cases on there. Always check there first before posting.

Q19) How do I rotate decals in the Mission Editor? A19) Hold down shift, then drag the decal to whatever rotation you want. Q20) How do I create my own badges and banners? A20) Follow IBBoards simple tutorial on his website. Linkage: http://skins.hiveworldterra.co.uk/Article/view_19.html

Right, that’s me done for the time being. I will keep updating this, as more recurring questions arise.

Remember: Google is your friend!

Peace out,

The_splurge

Q17 - I've not just answered that once, I've answered it at least three times! How people can miss the "Post Thread" button is beyond me.

Q13 - not all mods are on DoWFiles. My Halved and Quartered Marines mods certainly aren't, neither is my UberPainter, and unless someone else is ignorant/stupid/thieving and posts them as their own, they never will be. Also, Tau 1.5 isn't on there at the moment.

Ah right, I didn't realise that. I can't go back and edit my first post, as it was a while ago, so I will keep adding posts to it as time goes by. A13) Most mods can be found on DoWfiles. If a mod isn't there, it can either be found on Relic forums, or on the peronal website of that mod team.

And I'm glad people like the FAQ!

Yeah, it answers most of my questions. I don't understand with the daemon hunters mod, I install it and start the game, look for the daemonhunters race, but I can't find it. What is going on? PS: I did remember to activate the mod.

Check Q16. The mod in question you are trying to play is of an earlier version that DoW1.41. It is currently not compatible with 1.41 or Wa.

You don't need to upgrade both. You may have misunderstood what I said. The Daemonhunters mod will not play on an upgraded version of DoW. It requires DoW v1.3 IIRC.
