I didn't make it!
Hi, ive got a little issue with EF1. when i download map files direct from internet explorer, my download rate/speed is an average of 640 kb/s. but whenever i download using EF1, (when connecting to servers), the speed rarely goes above 5 kb/s. what can i do???
This is "normal". You can't do anything about that. The Game servers are made for low connection, low data rate, the engine is from 1999 means modem 56k or isdn at best. So the data transfer rate is set with the command sv_rate or rate, this limits the data amount for every player. If the server sends you data, in this case a map which is about 1 to 30 mb depending on the map then it will send this data with the speed limit given by the server settings.
The reason is that other clients on the server do not get affected by your download (would make high ping for everyone untill you have completed download), and if the map changes the data connection is aborted and your download, if not complete is data trash (I dono can ef1 resume teh download?).
Besides the speed limit, download them better via http(Websites) or ftp(Fileservers), protocol, udp-Protocol which games are useing is good for gaming but sucks when it comes to file transfer.
What Chriss said is right for vanillaEF.
If the server is an ioEF server and is set up for http-download correctly you can get better download speed (almost the same as downloading from web as far as the server has a good enough connection) by using ioEF/ioCow as client.
ValliaEF is the engine of the default game, ioEF is a improved version and is not shipped with the default game.
