I'm planning on making a mod for jedi outcast II, but have heard 3Ds Max works better for making player models and animations. I've also heard milkshape 3D has been trouble for many people modeling for jedi outcast II.

The reason I ask this is because I can't afford 3Ds Max, not even the student version. I was wondering if Gmax works good for making player models/animations?

If I'm going to have to go out and purchase a 3D package, here is what I would be able to afford:

Softimage XSI Student version

Lightwave 3D Student Version

Milkshape 3D

Is there any other solution for making game models, player models, and animations for jedi knight II? What 3D program works best with jedi knight II?

You can make a model with pretty much anything, although 3dsmax is the only program you can use to get it ingame.

Rob a bank or do something to get 3ds max :D I never had any trouble with Milkshape and I think it's a handy little program because of all the import and export support. I like the simplicity of Milkshape but gmax is far superior for modeling but more complicated. From what I've heard some people will get others who have 3ds max to finish off their models for them.

You can get a 30 day trial here for 3ds max 6: http://www.discreet.com/3dsmax/

If you've never touched this program before I suggest learning gmax first before installing 3ds max because you'll spend most of your 30 days on learning the software. gmax is a light version of 3ds max, which is free, and has most of the necessary modeling features. http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/

So does this mean I will have to purchase 3Ds Max? Will I be able to get jk2 models in game with Gmax?

I wouldn't start making a player model in gmax but maybe milkshape. gmax doesn't have a lot of support for exporting but milkshape does. The only way I know of getting an model made in gmax into 3ds max is by first exporting it as an md3 then importing. The problem is when the model is converted into the md3 format it looks real messy and hard to look at. Milkshape may be able to export it in a format that is cleaner which can be opened in 3ds max. I'm not sure about this so don't quote me on it. If you want to create player models and save yourself a lot of trouble get 3ds max.
