I'm trying to make a shader from a jpg and I keep getting some kind of error everytime I try to open it up. I have both ShaderEd2 and q3ase.

Depends what word Grate means but i can make basic 3 of shaders. Specular, Self-Illuminating, Reflection or any of these 3 combined.

I mean an iron frame of parallel or crossed bars like the grate used in artus_detention in the tie-fighter hanger. I have the code to do it but I don't know how to create the alpha channel. I have paint shop pro if that helps.

After some experimenting easiest way would be 2 images. First one is base color texture and other is greyscale image same size as base texture. On greyscale image draw alpha channel information. Then combine these two. Color texture as selected and choose Masks from menu then New and From Image. And for source use greyscale texture and Create mask from: Source luminance. Just remember that .jpg cant save alpha channels at all.
