I was wondering how I could change a PK3 file into a MAP file. When I open a map through my editor it only lets me open MAP files. Can somebody help me on this? :lookaround:
Is there any way to open a PK3 map with an editor?
first off, a .pk3 file isn't a map. it's sort of like a .zip file - it has the map, custom textures, scripts etc... and the .bsp is included in there. there's a program called Debsp that decompiles a .bsp file out there somewhere but I can't remember where I found it... and you'll also need a tool that will un-zip a .pk3 file. I believe winzip does this but I use Dragon Unpacker... u can get that here: http://drgsoft.free.fr/index.php?page=dup4&language=en and don't go changing any maps... if you find this program use the .map files only for reference for example to see how someone did something...
Thanks for your help Johnny B. :) But, I'm having trouble extracting the files of a map (I have permission to edit it). When I go to extract it, the PK3 files seperates into maps_(map x).bsp, scripts_(map x).arena, shaders_skies.shader, botroutes_(map x).wnt. I try to open the map through my editor, but it makes it freeze up. Can you help me on this one? Sorry if I sound dumb, but I don't have any experience with this stuff and I'm still learning.
ok umm... first of all that program called BSPDecompiler, you can get that here: http://www.rtcwfiles.com/file.info?1553 at RtCW files... Jk2 wasn't out when it came out, but it says it works on all quake engine games (return to castle wolfenstein, q1, 2, and 3, kingpin, half-life) except soldier of fortune... so I can't guarantee that it'll work. theres directions on how to use it in that link i gave u... and yeah that's what you want, all those seperated files. ignore the .scripts, .arenas and .shaders though, you just want the .bsp files. umm... take one of those .bsp files (i dunno why there's more than one...) and decompile it with that program... you should end up with a .map file that can be viewed with a map editor...
:uhm: I've downloaded BSPDecompiler, and have all of the requirements (windows XP and VB studios), and I even downloaded vbrun60. Whenever I go to decompile the .bsp file, it gives me a bscp text document that says the following:
BSPC version 2.1h, May 6 2001 16:15:03 by Mr Elusive bsp2map: C:\Documents and Settings\Preferred Customer\Desktop\maps_jedi_academy.bsp to maps_jedi_academy.map allocated 17 MB and 758 KB of BSP memory -- Sin_LoadMapFromBSP -- Loading map from C:\Documents and Settings\Preferred Customer\Desktop\maps_jedi_academy.bsp... Sin_LoadBSPFile: odd lump size
Can somebody please help me open this map? :D
hmm... well, the decompiler may not be compatible with JK2 then, I'll try it on wednesday when I can and see what happens. I have no idea what it's talking about "odd lump size."
Thank you for all your help again. :agreed:
I was curious and I tried this thing out but I get an error comdlg32.ocx not found , I have xp pro and I installed those runtime files but no luck I figure its just a gui anyways but I still wouldn't know what I was doing
