From my perspective, BSG looks like one of those TV shows that you need to watch from the beginning to understand. I started watching it from the beginning of Season 4. Now, I sort of understand whats going on (like a Cylon vs Human war, the Humans are looking for Earth, and something about a Hybrid). I have a few questions about it. 1) Up until season 4, what happens, I have no clue whats going on then? 2) What the purpose of the Hybrid? 3) What does Earth serve as? And I'll think of some more later on. Many thanks in advance.

I advice you to actually get the first 3 seasons though. To say it quickly. But I think I can say two things without spoiling it. a) Earth is their mythical destination b) The hybrids are the main control mechanisms of Basestars.

In a nutshell, the Cylons nuked the home planet of the humans, leaving only a handful of survivors who escaped that fate (like 60,000).

There's really too much to explain. Seriously, watch the first 3 seasons or you are going to be completely lost, not to mention missing some great stuff. This show is a space opera, and you've missed the first 3 acts. ;)

Meh, I understand most of whats going on. If I can't get the first 3 seasons in a box set like I did the Matrix series, then I'm not gonna bother watching them. *gets on limewire* Just kidding. I'll consider it, if I have any money to use after what I'm planning on doing soon. The nukeing, was that the Battle of New Caprica?

The battle of New Caprica was something else. Their home world that was nuked was Caprica, where there was no battle, it was a sneak attack by the Cylons, decimating the planet.

As for getting a hold of the first 3 seasons (and the pilot miniseries), I would recommend using Netflix. Love that service, they'll have all of the BG series. There are other ways too. ;)

This series is just like 24 and Lost in a sense...you are watching for the beginning or not at all. If you just started with season 4, stop...stop NOW. Do what Oblivious suggested and get the miniseries and the first three seasons ignore season 4 untill you are done watching everything else.

Or I could read up on everything on the BSG Wiki....lol. I think I know enough, but maybe I can convince my dad to get me the full series. But, I'll still stick with Season 4, spoiling the whole season or not, I'm to into it to stop now.

In a nutshell...

Spoiler: Show

The humans created the Cylons but treated them as slaves, Cylons revolted and there was a massive war. A cease fire was signed and neither side heard from each other for over twenty years. The Cylons having problems with their old style Centurions lack of adaptability to changing situations researched and developed what appear to be human/Cyborg hyrids.

Some twenty years later the Cylons have developed the hybrids to the point that they can interact with humans undetected. The one known as six sneaks into Human space via pirate and smuggler routes and befriends Gaius Baltar a genius and a womanizer. Six becomes his lover and his associate and assistant worker and thus gets access to all teh Colonial defense codes and plans. The Cylons launch a computer virus that takes down the defense network and come in fast and hard and destroy the Colonial fleet. Almost all the Battlestars are destroyed. Pegasus did a blind FTL jump while still moored in space dock. The Galactica was away from Caprica on the way to her decommisioning ceremony and had most of her fighters and armor stripped off in preparation for it to become a museum ship.

The human survivors grab ships and form a small fleet to try and get away. The Cylons find the fleet. All the FTL capable ships jump out right before the Cylons show up and nuke the survivors. The rest is a running fight to stay ahead of the Cylons til the humans find New Caprica and since they think they have escaped the Cylons they settle a colony there. One of the six's gets a nuclear warhead that Gaius Baltar was given for research and detonates it in the middle of the fleet and destroys several ships and thousands of lives. The Cylons have all but given up on finding the humans detect a nuclear pulse from the bomb in a very remote area and find the humans. Most of the humans are caught unprepared and the Pegasus and Galactica have to jump away leaving everyone behind or face certain destruction over New Caprica against overwhelming odds.

Gaius Baltar is President at this time and is forced to work with teh Cylons and becomes a puppet leader for the Cylons. Many atrocities and executions are committed by the Cylons to try and break the back of the human resistance.

Finally Galactica organizes a raid to liberate and rescue as many humans as they can and goes up against IIRC 4 basestars. Galactica is getting its butt beat when Pegaus, who was supposed to stay behind and guard whats left of the fleet jumps in and kicks the living shit out of the Cylons, IIRC single handedly taking out 3 basestars and badly damaging the 4th. Many of the humans are able to get their ships free and take off and rejoin the fleet.

Lots more running battles trying to get away from the Cylons, Hybrids now know that 4 of the final 5 unknown hybrids are in teh Colonial fleet, the 5th is not known.

Cylons have now broken into a civil war over differences on what to do about the humans and the final hybrids.

Thats a fast and dirty recap, lots left out.

What is the significance of earth?

Spoiler: Show
The Colonials are decended originally from 13 Colonies. The Colonials we know of running from the Cylons are from the 12 colonies. The 13th Colony was a remote and distant planet known as earth. It is supposedly a paradise. The Cylons know about it and it seems Starbuck has been there, which is a whole nother post.

The Hybrids job?

Spoiler: Show

The hybrids feel that the Cylons were not created by man, but by God who created them by working through the humans. Cylons feel man is a flawed creation and that Cylons have bettered man and are closer to god.

Some Cylons seem to feel man is flawed and inferior and should be destroyed and some seem to see man as misguided and need to be put through destruction and ordeals to show them the one true path towards God.

The current civil war IIRC is that one side wants to destroy man and denies that four of the unknown hybrids are in the fleet and says any talk on the subject is forbidden.

One key line of thinking of the Cylons is that all that has happened has happened before and will happen again, that time is circular. The Six in charge of the Rebels feels that somthing is different this time and that tehy need to work with the humans.

The Cylon raiders saw one of the hubrids in the fleet and are refusing to fight. As a result the Raiders are lobotomized to make them easier to control and remove free will. to counter the Cylon "rebels" counter by removing the higher brain function inhibitors on the Centurions. Six is able to control them but only by treating them with respect and using "please" and thank you's"

You can't summarize the first three seasons in a nutshell. There's way too much that happens--particularly in season 2--for anything after that to make sense without seeing the entire story unfold. This is especially true with respect to the Cyclon human models (in fact, there is a lot of stuff involving the Cyclons that won't make sense if you don't see the episode "Downloaded", which itself doesn't make much sense if you haven't seen pretty much everything before it). The miniseries and seasons 1-3 are available in a grand total of four box sets (season 2 was released in two parts, and the miniseries is boxed with season 1). Get them and watch them. Rent them, whatever. It's worth it.
