Not sure whether this belongs in the Tech forum or not, feel free to move it anyone.

My Mum wants me to buy a blue ray player for Christmas however I am not sure. We have a crappy HD DVD player and it would be much cheaper (but not I'm a greedy money grabbing bastard cheap) for me to replace that. We already have a brillaint tv and surround sound and I don't see the benefits. My question is this: Is Blue Ray better than HD and by better I mean noticeably better?

Considering that HD DVD is no longer being made, it may be a little hard to get.

Yes, IMHO, I have found that Blu-Ray looks amazing on the right TV. HOwever, I never had the chance to see and actual HD DVD play, so I couldnt tell you if its different.

Also, if you find the right place, its really easy to get a cheap Blu-Ray player.

What Antilles said...

I only buy Bluray movies that are worth it.. Scifi movies like star trek look amazing on it, same as avatar or iron man. But there are movies that aren't worth it and you don't see a difference if you compare them to dvd or it's almost not noticeable.

If you have the right TV (and I believe the player itself is also a factor) YES it is absolutely 100% worth it. I was blown away when I saw a movie in "true" Blu-Ray format. Just unbelievable.

Cheers for the replies, suppose I'll splash out this Christmas then.

Just you hear alot of controversy regarding blue ray these days, good to get some reliable advice from people who have seen blue ray films.

Like they are rubbish and no different from HD if not worse and that they're not worth their money and so on.

I've lost hope in human kind after reading the papers..

Granyaski, it's just simple, you have movies that look astounding on bluray and you have movie where you don't see a big difference. You just have to look around.

You really shouldn't take Jeremy Clarkson's opinions as fact! :lulz:

But yeah, blu-ray is only worth it if you want to get the most out recent movies, and some not so recent ones aswell.

And dude, it's "blu-ray", not "blue ray". I'm sorry, but when you are a blu-ray enthusiast like me, seeing someone spell it wrong is the equivalent of having your testicles put through a wood chipper. :Panic:
