For those of you who don't know already, this is a series on HBO about prohibition and organized crime in New Jersey, Chicago, New York, and some other places. It tells the story of Nucky Thompson and his "empire" in Atlantic City, James Damerty and his dreams of becoming a gangster, Margaret Schroder and her rise from poverty, and the business of organized crime and liquor.
Personally, I love the show and I think the set-up for each episode keeps it entertaining. The thought of using Steve Buscemi as a lead-man is interesting and his acting is superb. I always knew he was a good actor but this is probably the only role I've ever seen him in where he isn't a creepy guy. The actor who plays Jimmy (can't think of his name) does a good job of playing into the returning war hero aspect. The atmosphere and side characters shed light on certain situations and the time period.
I like it. Good acting all around and interesting characters. There is the aging crime boss who has trouble with the increasingly violent competition, the young widow suddenly involved in politics and crime realizing her power as mistress and the ambitious war veteran.
The pace of the series is slower than the norm, but the acting is better. The story, so far, was ok, but could be a bit more interesting.
Great show, like a 1920s Sopranos without having to listen to Edie Falco's Carmela whine about everything. The pace is a little slow at times, but the acting is great (Buscemi in particular) and overall its one of the best shows on television. I'm liking all the little intertwining sub-plots going on that have come together in later episodes, there's something of a continuity about it that I like. I also like how HBO has included historical figures of the time like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano and Arnold Rothstein. Good show though, overall its the one show I look forward to every week.
Now that the season Finale is over, what're your thoughts on recent episodes? I personally liked the change in character for Capone and Jimmy being more of the action man.
I liked the character development, even if it was rather slow. I don't know what to make of Van Alden, he creeps me out big time. I'm already looking forward to the next season.
Never seen it, I might have to try and find it, sounds pretty good.
I didn't make it!
