With a bit more time on my time-table free to watch a teensy bit more TV, I've been watching the UK Sci-Fi channel. Last few days I've watched Farscape and Dark Angel, two very enjoyable series. So, this is what gets me about Fox:

Futurama - Axed. Season 4. Coming back for a new series on Comedy Central. FireFly - Axed. Season 1, but told mid-way through the season it was going to finish. 'Serenity' film followed it up later. Dark Angel - Axed. Season 2. I believe some books were written to carry it on. Family Guy - Axed. Axed again, but now going again. Mutant X - Axed. Season 3. Left on a cliff-hanger. Apparently too much like X-Men (well, being based off a Marvel Comic...)

Could be me, but there are at least 3 series there that were definitely popular, those being Futurama, FireFly and Family Guy and perhaps whilst the other two were a further niche market, they were still pretty enjoyable to watch. Now, the question comes down to it: Is Fox just a little bit axe-happy, or do they REALLY have reason to cut all that they do? Is it that they under-estimate shows, or take the American population (and that of the world too) as knowing what they want, or do the American population simply not like these shows?

Thoughts? Discussions?

Don't forget about Married...With Children. It was a landmark series that launched the Fox Network. It ran for 10 years then all of the sudden in 1997, Fox decided it wasn't going to "pick it up" for the next season. No series finale, not officially cancelled, just no more show. What's really sad about that is, the actors on the show found out about it from watching the news - The class act we call the Fox Network made a press release before ever telling the cast.

I made a post in here a little while ago about this after fox cancelled Drive after only 4 episodes... i think they are basically just ratings whores, they only care about getting the ratings and not actually quality TV. thats why we get crap like American Idol.

All the networks are ratings whores. Fox is just the most blatant about it. One of my favorite shows this past fall/spring was "Jericho". It ran for an entire season (with a late winter planned hiatus) finale and all, but now it's not on the CBS fall line up. Just goes to show that Fox isn't the only asses in the industry. They'll probably replace Jericho with another reality show.

I know we live in the reality show era, but the programmes we've listed above far outweigh in terms of quality any and all reality shows. I do agree though that most networks are 'rating whores', a much shame.
