I mostly wanna talk about the movie here (since that is what has sparked this post) but we can also talk about the games in relation to the film...

Anyway, I saw this movie last night and I'm really on the fence for what I thought about it. Here is a review of which I wrote for the movie on the website Rotten Tomatoes:

Spoiler: Show

I dont think it's really fair to call this a "bad" movie - it has its ups and downs and as far as video game to film goes this can be considered one of the more believable and successful adaptations. Silent Hill meshes together the plot from the first game along with bits and pieces from throughout the 4 or 5 game series. Hoping to discover the source of her adopted childs nightmares, Rose Da Silva takes her daughter to the mysterious town of Silent Hill. After a high speed police chase that leaves Rose unconscience and the police officer wiped out Rose awakens to find herself alone in a foggy world where ash floats down from the sky. Now, Rose must attempt to find her daughter, but that's not all she finds...Rose comes to learn the dark and horrible secrets of the town of Silent Hill and the past of her adopted daughter.

The cast wasnt anything too special here. Radha Mitchell isnt as bad as say other horror/gore fest film lead actresses but you can see why she hasnt come up to often on the box office hit movies. Rose's daughter played by Jodelle Ferland doesnt have much of a track record either but her most brillant times is when she protrays the more darker, tormented, and evil version of herself. Then, there's Sean Bean...and Sean is just....Sean...mediorce and doesnt get too much screen time in all.

The biggest negatives of this film were 3 things: 1) The movie, for it's genre and content, was WAY too long. Over 2 hours of Silent Hill just makes you wanna never watch the movie again after the first time. The movie was slowed down by unnecessary scenes and random dialouge. 2) Dialouge that made you cringe more than the gore for once. Like most video game to movie adaptations the only thing the movie makers seem to stick to is video game dialouge - that may work for an acclaimed video game but not for a movie guys. 3) The plot is somewhat original from other horror/thriller films out there but it can lose you at some points. I liked that you didnt NEED to know all the background info on the Silent Hill video games to understand the movie, but still...it suffers from time to time and honestly I have no idea how this movie ended or what it was saying by ending the way it did.

The positives? Well much like the praise the video game got Silent Hill the movie earns its praises in visuals and atmosphere. First thing I took a liking to was the foggy and ash falling environment the otherworldly Silent Hill stood in...sheer brilliance and adds somewhat of a creep factor. Secondly just how we go from daylight to night in the movie, and how daylight = safety and night = hell. It's a part of the game series but it still works pretty well for this kind of movie...I love the air raid alarm sounding when darkness falls. Musically while the film doesnt have an amazing oscar winning score it does use the original music that made the games for creepy which adds alot to the movie itself and for fans of the games to enjoy.

Lastly the most impressive and original part of this movie is just the nasty creatures that come to life from a 3D computer game to live action and CG. You wont find any other creatures out there now that are as disturbing as some of the ones in this movie look and feel....great work.

Silent Hill isnt as bad a movie as most will have you believe. As long as you can find the strength to sit there for 2+ hrs of horror movie then you should be fine. If you're a fan of the series, horror movies in general, or gore than this movie really is for you to at least watch.

So, there that is. Anyway, has anyone else seen this movie and either disliked or liked it? If you've seen this movie and know something of the game fiction can anyone please tell me what is with the end of this movie! It just doesnt make any sort of sense to me at all.

I thought it was an original horror, especially the sequences when darkness fell and everyone fled to the church during sirens while this big behemoth slayed this one woman who didn't make it, that was a strong scene, the rest wasn't that bad really.

The games were ok, but the movie just pushed me over the edge. I'm usually into horror movies but I just couldn't sit through it. It just managed to keep me bored almost the whole time.

Yeah - I thought those darkness falling sequences were just amazing in how they were done...the air raid siren made it even better though for some reason or another

So it just borded you or are there other reasons you didnt take a liking to it? It is quite long for a film of it's type and there are plenty of sequences that help it move along but yeah - it gets pretty boring in spots

The air raid siren added to the eeriness becasue: 1. It was out of place 2. Air raid sirens signal an imminent danger 3. It was signaled as darkness fell

I thought the movie was great, the monsters were pretty scary.. Not piramid head or the janitor, but the Burned children and the Lying creature (the acid spitter) freaked me out. The latter trough horrible unnatural movement, shared by the nurses at the ending of the film, complete with icky socket popping noises as they moved around.

I find the whole story interesting.. alot of questions remained unanswered, i never played the games and don't plan on doing so.. It made me ponder, it got me mildly freaked out.. this movie was good, plain and simple, original art.

Really? I thought those two were among the more freaky monsters of the film. Pyramid Head was just straight up badass

Spoiler: Show
the huge knife thing he has and how he grabs a hold of anna and rips her clothes off then rips her skin off in one movement, then throws the bloody mess against the church doors...sick nasty

The 5th game would be the next game that has yet to come out. Are you thinking of the one where you're a guy who's locked in his room or are you thinking of the one where you play as a blonde haired teen girl?

Also this is how the movie ended:

Spoiler: Show
After Alessa comes out of the church and kills all the crazy fanatic people Rose and Sharron close their eyes and wake up with everything gone and peaceful. They go back to the car that didnt previously work and get in. The car now magically starts and they take off towards the cliff but magically when they drive off the edge the old road appears. Finally they drive back through the town and then get home and enter the house but no one is there. Meanwhile we see her husband flopping around the house, is disturbed by something, and notices the front door open but no one around. It changes back and forth between Rose and Sharron inside the house still in the foggy blue toned world and the husband inside the house in the real world. I dont know what this all means but I think it suggests that Rose and Sharron are now ghosts, still stuck in the "otherworld", but I dont know for certain.

Yeah the one you played was the latest: Silent Hill 4: The Room (which actually wasnt supposed to be a Silent Hill game to begin with).

I tried playing SH3 and SH4 on the PC and truthfully I find controlling 3rd person view point games on a key board is just....horriblely unnatural for me...3rd person viewpoint games are more of a console thing (but since I have an Xbox 360 there are no SH games I can play on it)

Yeah - I heard that a second film is in the making. I'm not too sure what the content of it will be but it wouldnt surprise me if it was Sean Bean going back to Silent Hill to try and find Sharron and Rose - the movie kinda ends in an open fashion leaving enough room for a sequel.

Yet, who knows. Maybe it'll take the same road which the games do and just give us absolutely new characters being drawn to Silent Hill for different reasons and having to go through different challenges and trials and such.
