What's up with Stargate in crystals?

Like there's a crystal for everything.

Anyone have any idea what inspired this? Its definitely unique.

There's not a Stargate forum so I thought I'd drop this in the general entertainment forum.

I've always assumed that they are a form of optical computer technology, like the isolinear chips used in Star Trek, but I can't recall it ever being explained like that.

Yeah. Ive noticed that too. And the Tokra (sp?) use them to dig their tunnles too. Its very odd. I suppose it is pretty unique though. Interesting question

Yeah that's kind of what I figured.

Ah. So that sits in as the general Stargate forum now. Interesting. Thanks.

Laughing Cheese;4631356Yeah that's kind of what I figured.

That's pretty much the only explanation I can think of from a realistic point of view, as your average cave-grown crystal won't really be of much use to a computer.

Yeah. If I were staff here I'd have it moved to Entertainment (the SG1/Atlantis part anyway), but what do I know?

I think it somehow is related to the fact that most platforms we store data on are connected to silicon, which does in fact organize itself into crystals... the main idea might have been some sort of crystal that you don't have to put into a special form to store data on... like a vastly advanced computer (well, dealing with advanced technologies is basically what they do...)
