I know it does not sit well with many in gaming / nerd circles as some see it as offensive, personally I don't get that at all as it tends to be pretty accurate in the technical details and science when it does not have to be, and like all sit-coms it's an exagguration of reality. Basil Fawlty isn't a typical hotel owner, The Office isn't like a real office, exactly, it just takes elements of reality and blows them up.

But weather you love it or you hate it, why do you reckon it's so popular? It heavily references cult movies, TV, Sci-Fi and other elements of nerd culture that you would expect half the jokes to be lost on a general audience, yet it's one of the most successful TV shows of all time. Its a bit weird, no?

There's been a surge of people just pretending to be nerds.

Case in point, Fandom (ex-Wikia).
