I'm trying to make a new sword model for Oblivion, but I'm just a fledgling modder and I'd like to use some other meshes to go off of, but I cant open a dang NIF file from 3DS Max 8 no matter how hard I try.

I've looked up and down and sideways, through Google, through Yahoo!, nothing. I keep seeing things about NIF importers or NIF to 3DS converters but almost everything I come across is old and outdated or the URL doesnt even work anymore.

Its driving me absolutely bonkers, and kinda making me think twice about trying to make my own weapons.. Can I get some help? IE Do any of you know where to find a working NIF importer or NIF to something-openable-in-3DS converter?

http://niftools.sourceforge.net/ they have nifskope, which can export the mesh of a nif into obj format, which should be readable by 3DS Max They also have a blender plugin, which works well.
