*sigh* i definitely need some help on this. i got oblivion for Christmas and played it for about 4 weeks on a awful graphics card, Nvidia 5500 and as expected it ran rly bad and crashed often. now only just yesterday i got a new graphics card, an Nvidia GeForce 7600 agp8x, it ran very smoothly for about 20 mins but then the crashing started again... i do remeber it saying wen figuring out which quality it shuld be set on it and saying "Video Hardware unrecognized" and setting it to medium quality. i havnt added any mods watso ever and it either crashes wen entering a new area, getting through the start-up loading screen or even wen im jst walking around. Im thinking that playing oblivion on the older graphics card cud of damaged graphics files that r stored on my comp itself and not the disk, but im not too sure. my comp also does meet all system requirements so it may not be the comp.

does any1 no if it cud be that oblivion cudnt recognise the graphics card, or that i havnt tried re-installing it yet...

help any1?

No, not possible. The files weren't damaged. There are a few things, first of all, do you have the latest graphics driver? And is Oblivion updated to the 1.2 patch? And the most recent version of DirectX 9? What are the other specs of your computer?(Like Ram, and Processor Speed.) And finally, start the Oblivion launcher.(It should open up when you put the disk in the drive.) It's the menu thing that has the options like 'Play' 'Data Files' and 'Options'. Hit the Technical Support button; is there anything under the 'Warnings' tab?

The Elder Scrolls Thats a link to the latest patch (scroll to the middle where Oblivion is). It should be OBLIVION PATCH v1.2.0416

Well, it might not be the 'Oblivion' patch. It may be the Shivering Isles patch, depending on if you have it or not... or if you got the Game of the Year edition.(Darkish gray box.) That computer should be able to run it... probably on about medium. How did you go about updating your graphic drivers?

oh, yea i got the game of the year thing :D and i have all the parts of it installed... it cud always be sum kind of program working in the background thats causing the crashes or that my comp doesn't have adequate ventilation, because the fans are at the back, which is pushed up against the wall, and doesn't have any at the front.

should i try reinstalling oblivion and both knights and shivering isles with it, or don't install them and see how it runs?

oh no need to worry any more, i fixed it. it was i kept on having my view distance of objects, actors etc. up too high cus i though the comp cud handle it at that setting... silly me, i should next time test my problem b4 i ask about it =p

Alright, that's good. Make sure to get the Shivering Isles Patch, and not the Oblivion one then.. that is, if the GotY version doesn't already come with the patch. You might also want to consider getting the Unofficial Oblivion Patch, and the Unofficial Shivering Isles patch.
