I recently started a new FEAR game, and before one the very early missions the instructions stated something like "do not engage enemy unless they fire at you first". So I did that, and I was able to walk right by the soldiers as if I were invisible. I played about half way through like this. A couple of times I had to use the "maphole" cheat to get out of the level because I was stuck; i.e. a locked door would not open, etc. Has anyone else found this bug, if thats what it is? Thanks.
maybe the soldiers just really like you
I remember that instruction being provided- probably around where you did ('Initiation', I think, could be wrong), but I hadn't managed to get off that easily (just walking by the Replica soldiers and having them not notice, apparently because they weren't shot at)... if I can ask, was your weapon holstered? I didn't get into the habit of doing that until about a third of the way through the game, and partly because I wasn't that careful in multiplayer F.E.A.R. as yet. That might've been it, but I can't answer your question concretely myself; that's only a guess I've made.
A last question, if I may: what were you patched to when you restarted the campaign? My copy was patched to 1.4 back when I started playing the game, but I haven't gone further back than 'Bishop' (the part regarding the bomb expert defusing the explosives strapped to the dude in the chair, about 1/3 of the way through) under 1.6.
Maybe they liked that I wasn't shooting at them.
Answer to Worker: I had my pistol out. I remember because I cold-cocked the first two soldiers from behind (ala SOF2). I didn't notice they were ignoring me until later in that level. I later started holstering my weapon. My game was patched to 1.2.
Cool. I had never had my current installation of F.E.A.R. patched between 1.0 and 1.3; it might've been a weird bug that was still present (or became present) when you were running at 1.2, and in that case I wouldn't have seen it myself.
I didn't think holstering your weapon would've mattered in the end, but I thought it best to ask and I appreciate you being as matter-of-fact as you have about it.
Apparently this bug was caused by a mod that was installed. Un-installed it; now its back to normal.
