As mentioned, it's hard to compare the two. HL2 has a better, more elaborate story, and is told better through the gameplay. It's AI however, sucks compared to FEAR, especially the squad AI.

There is way more variety in the maps and enemies in HL2, the most daunting of which are the gunships, which aren't easy to shoot down in some cases without sustaining damage. They also make an awesome and spooky sound. The Striders are also interesting and fairly challenging to engage, and make spooky sounds too.

My biggest gripe about HL2 is the stuttering problem it has with many high end video cards (including mine), and as mentioned, the stupid "Follow Freeman" squad AI.

FEAR's enemy AI is among the best you will find, and you really don't have to worry about sqaud AI, as you primarily fight alone. The maps and enemies however, are not nearly as diverse as I'd like them to be.

The best thing about FEAR is the intense graphic realism of the video and sound effects during battle, though it's not really as spooky as it's touted to be unless you're inclined to scare easily.

IMO, though both games have endings that are too easy, as well as the other shortcomings mentioned, they are both worth buying. I should mention however, that I only paid $20 for HL2, and $35 for FEAR.

just .....hard to compare.

I would say Half Life 2 for value though -Because it comes with C:S which will keep you occupied for a long time ,and the single players fab. Also, there are plenty of Mods out for HL2 -such as garrys Mod etc.So overall, the game is worth the money.

But F.E.A.R has immense fight sequences which just beat half life 2 for the sheer action expirience, but the story is short and multiplayer will eventually become as fun as smacking your head against a brick wall........

If I could only choose one, I'd go with HL2. I play both but find myself spending a bit more time with HL2.

I got HL2 I was happy. There was an ATI All-in-Wonder 9600 promotion. You buy the video card (which is amazing, by the way) and you get a voucher that you can redeem for Half Life 2. Now seee... I thought it was just HL2.. but it included DoD, CS:S, HL:S: HL2:DM, and a bunch of other games that I can't remember off the top of my head..

but I am getting off topic now.

HL2 is a pretty good game, but it's also over rated, if you have a high speed modem it's a good buy, if not, then your going to be pissed, because it takes 4 hours after installation to verify the SP game, and load times tend to be long on anything less than a top of the line computer. That and some instability are the main flaws in it.

FEAR, I haven't played, but as long as it doesn't have anything to do with Steam it has a one up on HL2.

Overall they are equal buys in my opinion though I can't really say with accuracy which game is better.

how is that more realistic? i think ghost oare more believable then aliens. besides the F.E.A.R engine even makes the game look more realistic in that way. im just not a big fan of half life. so F.E.A.R has this one hands down, its sp might be a short story but the multiplayer is good too.

I have been modding HL2 for a lil while... and there's a way to combine some of FEAR's effects into it, along with models and other things...

I am attempting to figure out a way to combine all the effects in, but High Dynamic Range works well in HL2 until I can...

If I can get everything to work, maybe HL2's next 3rd party game will blow you,

in HL2 most of the non human creatures are mutations or creatures from the Combine's domain...

the FEAR AI is something I am attempting to also recreate, and probably will have to do some extra code extending work to get that to work...

so far, melee has been implimented, and the drop and fly kick has been done for it.

If I can find a way to perfect about 15 to 20 new weapons with bump'd decals that make the thing they get on transparent, as in holes through the object, that might be a new find useful for all games...
