This is my first post here, so I will try to make it easy to understand... First FEAR is my favorite FPS game(s) Ever! It's just so IN YOUR FACE FAST ACTION! I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q701 this summer to replace my old desktop which could play fear fairly well with graphics turned up. My old PC was just a Pentium 4, and this new laptop has a core 2 duo inside of it with 4Gigs of memory and 512MB Geforce 9700. Well the day I got it I tried to install FEAR and play it, with the same settings my max frame rate was about 30 in the performance test built into the game. I was so disgusted that I started putting it back into the box to take it back to Best Buy, but I ran a few other benchmarks and it turns out that it was just FEAR... F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R. Extraction Point... Both run very slow F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate.... I have everything up on max, running at 1440x900 and on the in-game benchmark test I get a min of 60fps and a max of over 200fps! so 100% of the benchmark is in the highest group, over 40fps. I am running windows Vista 64bit. The only thing that I can think of is that since each game is a stand-alone expansion perseus mandate is the only one with updated code to either handle dual core systems or 64bit OS. So my question is: Is there a way that I can load up the first 2 games with the perseus mandate engine and run them as mods or something similar.... I have tried doing a few things like switching the files and filenames around to try and trick it, but with no luck.

Try this:

  • right click on FEAR.exe / FEARXP.exe and choose Properties
  • go to Compatibility tab
  • enable Compatibility Mode and set it for Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
  • disable Desktop Composition
  • enable running with Administrative Priviledges
  • click Ok and try running the game(s)

This probably won't do any good, so you can try forceing the game(s) to use just one CPU core. Run the game, Alt-Tab out of it, press CTRL+ALT+Delete, find FEAR.exe / FEARXP.exe, right click on it and you should have the option to run on one core. This little trick worked for some other games, so give it a try. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip, but nothing seems to work my minimum framerate was 6fps and my maximum framerate 8fps :( I am running windows vista 64bit so I can use all 4GB of my RAM, maybe it would run a bit differently if I had chosen to install the 32bit Win Vista, and ran it on 2GB of System memory. But I'm not about to wipe my system clean just for the slim shot that it might work. I might as well just put my old version of win XP on here if I was going to go that far. But I'm not going to even give it a shot. I had many, many hours of fun going through F.E.A.R. on every difficulity seeing how much less I could use my reflexes each time. I guess that it may just be time to move on..... I'm not that much of a modder, but I just know that there has to be a way to load up the first game with the updated Perseus Mandate engine. In the meantime I think that I will watch the F.E.A.R. 2 trailer about 1,000 more times and drool all over my keyboard praying that I don't have to turn the settings down too much to play it at a decent framerate

I know that this is going to sound crazy but it is the total Truth as what the game is doing!!! (latest patch installed, running on both cores nothing checked for compatability mode) I changed all of my display settings to maximum, just as they are in Perseus Mandate and then exited the game and restarted it and ran the benchmark test and my min was 61fps, average was 115fps, and maximum was 217fps running ever so smooth on a resolution of 1440x900! and then as soon as it goes back to the game's menu everything goes super slow 8fps max! so it only works briefly for one time. which leads me to believe that it is a memory problem and not a dual core problem. I have not yet tried to play the game, as I am sure that the blistering 200fps framerate will not last.

Fortunately, I've found another possible (and quite strange) solution. Apparently, some people who had the same problem like you were able to solve it by disableing USB (HID Compliant) devices on their computers through the Device Manager, so give that a try too. If your mouse is USB, be carefull not to disable it, ofcourse.

What's this crazy talk about using a mouse? "I'm da BOMB at playing F.E.A.R. with my touchpad on my laptop" [NOT!!] Ever tried it though? It's incredibly hard! Like that game needs to be any more difficult! I went and tried playing it in single player mode, and it runs great for about 2 min then the framerate goes from over 100fps at any given time to about 8fps. Every time, without fail, seems almost like its on a timer to try and get me to throw my computer across the room. I quicksave and then exit the game, and run it again and I get about another 2min a good play time in. I really appreciate you looking into this for me, I've tried searching and wording my question differently in the search engines but I have found nothing. I'll try disabling the USB devices, and if that works, I will have to hereby claim you as my savior for a game I love so much... tell you what, I'll do something special for you. When I reach Paxton Fettel towards the end of the game and he is sitting down in that room all by himself on the floor... I'll splatter his brains all over in your name, then I'll yell "MEDIC!!!" very loud as though they might have a chance to save him. I'll let you know if it works or not.

You're too kind. :D If you want to do something for me, save Jin-Sun Kwon in Extraction Point. I was so sad when she died. :( [QUOTE=adm1nman;4759000]I'll let you know if it works or not.

Please do.

THANK YOU ALL MIGHTY SAVIOR OF MY GAME!!! I cannot even begin to tell you how happy your efforts have made me! Now I can finally play Extraction Point and get the missing pieces of the story line filled in on the best action shooter series ever made! I'll do my best to save your sweetheart. :nodding: P.S. Before I dive into Extraction Point, I'm going to go through F.E.A.R. Once more, its been almost a year. And when I meet my brother Paxton for the first time on this new PC, I'm going to give him a swift Bicycle kick right to the head! I'll try to get him square in the temple with the toe of my boot on the third and final kick before I make a perfect landing! "MEDIC!!!!!!!!! ... ... ... I swear I just nudged him with my foot to see if he was awake! He was already like this when I found him.... HE WAS ALREADY LIKE THIS!!"

And sorry for spoiling Jin's death (altough, it's not much of a spoiler since pretty much everyone ends up dead by the end of the game... ooops! I did it again! Doh! :p) I thought you've already played Extraction Point and now want to play it again. Alas, you won't be able to save Jin no matter what you do. Belive me; I tried. :bawl:

I was thinking about doing the same thing. I'll probably do it as soon as have enough free time. :nodding: [QUOTE=adm1nman;4759054]"MEDIC!!!!!!!!! ... ... ... I swear I just nudged him with my foot to see if he was awake! He was already like this when I found him.... HE WAS ALREADY LIKE THIS!!"

Sure he was. And pigs can fly. And Excelsior class ships have useable Transwarp drive. :D

I will be finishing F.E.A.R. tonight... probably my 6th time through... and I think I went through Perseus Mandate 2 times. I will be starting my journey to fill in many missing chunks of storyline that I missed out on. So out of the 3 (because to me its all one game really) which one did you like the best, for storyline and emotion? As for me I cannot say, F.E.A.R. will always hold special to me as it has got to be the first shooter that I have played that actually has a great story and plenty of suspense. I know there are a lot of FPShooters out there, and I've been playing them since way before they were 3D and in my opinion F.E.A.R. is.... well..... nothing even comes close, and this is coming from an ID Software FAN... Eat your heart out John Carmack, and get out your handy-dandy notepad while your at it and jot some things down. :p

I don't have Perseus Mandate, so I didn't play it yet. I can't really decide between the original F.E.A.R. and Extraction Point. Extraction Point begins exactly where original F.E.A.R. ends, so I can't really view them as separate games. They're both eaqully good to me.

I don't mean to sound rude and backseat moderate here, but the problem you had is apparently solved and there is no further reason to continue posting in this thread since we've kinda went off topic.
