Trying to run F.E.A.R. 1.08, I actually bought it! When trying to play it comes up with "unable to initialize the render to a valid video mode". Tried different screem resolutions, same problem. O/S Pentium 4 - 3.2 Ghz, 1 Gig RAM, Nvidia Geforce 6600GT, XP Pro. Please let me know if anyone has had or knows how to rectify this. Cheers
Are your graphic drivers up to date? F.E.A.R. requires ForceWare version 81.98 (or newer) in order to run properly , so that could be the problem. If not , come back here and we`ll see what else to try.
When you installed the game , did you allow it to update your DirectX? It doesn`t matter if your DirectX was already version 9.0c; you need to allow the game`s installer to make an update anyway. So , try reinstalling the game and see what happens.
Porblem Resolved You all probally know this but here goes. The prob is with certain versions of XP service pk2 contain directx 9b and no matter how many times you try to update to 9c it wont because windows thinks you all ready have it (good on you microsoft). It says its updated but it isnt (check dxdiag) Fix - download DirectX Happy Uninstall v3.97 (I tried version 4.02 did not work for me, this version did). This program deletes directx and reinstalls version 8.1. Then install full version of 9c which windows now recognises it can update and does (check dxdiag - version 9c). Works great at highest resolution. Thanks all for your help and I hope this helps anyone else with this problem
