I am trying to create a farcry mod that includes lots of animals.
- Can anyone tell me how to get a creature to follow the landscape like a jeep or car does.
- Also if anyone understands how the JMP thingy works in the script I would also appreciate some info on that too.
- .How would one get something to sink(swim) to a certain depth. I cannot get my fish dolphins or turtles to move at a depth and move from depth to depth although I can get them to find water and sink right to the bottom.
- The birds thing can it be rewritten or are they set. I want to create an interactive bird so it can land and follow a character.
In fact if there is any major info on how the physics engine works in FC that would be great.:):):)

Are you the modder of the Safari Animals?
I would suggest you reading the AI manual for FarCry. It is available under the Documentation folder in the FarCry directory. It provides TONS of information, that I am sure, would be very useful to you.
I would also suggest you downloading the SDK v1.1 and looking at the help inside there.
have read all the manuals but the one thing they don't go into much is the physics engine. In fact there seems to be info on everything but this. I really want to understand things like what function rotates the angle of the body and how the water system works. I am not the maker of those creatures though I have lizards turtles dolphins and several other creatures I am trying to add to the game. Their models all work but I can not get them to behave correctly. I need them to follow the land. Also trying to create the ability for one creature to ride on another( for several reasons.
Let me explain what I am trying to do! I am using the farcry engine to create an island rainforest that lives and breathes. I am trying to get animals to interact with each other and have life cycles as well as some of the plants.(eg bird eats fruit, bird drops seed, seed grows somewhere else, bird eats fruit)This (growth) I hope to achieve either by morphing or incrimental growth. Animals would also grow hunt and breed follow food sources and excrete die and break down to make areas more fertile.
well it sounds like you'd set up specific paths for the ai to follow, you could probably replace the mercs with a model that you make, just make sure they have bones and are the correct size. if you could accomplish all that you're trying to do, you would be the best modder ever! try to get the animals to follow designated paths.
Much of what I am working is happening. Lots of stuff is possible. The creatures dont follow specific paths but wonder around looking for food souces though I am trying to get them to learn from past successful and failed routes and also to remember dangerous places. In fact part of the idea is to get the creatures to learn and evolve to some point learning who their enemies are and where the best hiding places are. I am about to start a complete rework of the scripts now I know more on how the lua works though this physics stuff holds me back.
Has anyone actually written any physics script in lau and if so where and how. If there is any code monkey that would like to help I would be very greatful. I believe this project would revolutionise the farcry gaming experience creating a more holistic rainforest adventure where things happen dynamically and with purpose. Farcry has a nice engine for this and I believe that you could create a new game completely with the idea of balancing an eco-system and interacting with it. The idea could even be expanded for a form of interactive educational fun software. When the script is up and running I am even thinking of approaching Crytek over the idea. Any interested modders please contact me for the project is a huge one and has many aspects. I want modelers as well so I can get the max number of creatures and variations of these creatures. for instance I want a bird that dives into the water to catch fish or swoops down to pick up prey. Another bird script would act as a scavenger and a third would search for berries. All birds would need to be able to land in trees. all birds would have a nesting capability.all birds would find a mate but this would be different for flocking and solitary birds.
that is what it sounds like you need more than a modeler even, you need a good scripter. look at the editor manual, and they have info of pigs following specific paths. you do require a scripter for everything else because the animals don't swim down, just across the surface. if you wanted crytek to follow your idea, you'd have to repeat the process for the cryengine 2 which may or may not make it easier for you. if you want to recruit people, you won't find them here. i learned the hard way.

If you want the animals [I'm thinking of the pig] to act more realistically, you can use the pig model instead of the merc models [possible, ofcourse] and have the pig follow set paths as if it was a merc. I assume you know about creating forbidden areas [the "danger" areas you spoke of], that restrict the AI's movements. You should also look into setting up AI paths on 'unnatural' ground like decks, platforms, etc. I don't know, but I think you could do this for the pig and maybe shark. You can setup the light-blue colored special paths underwater for the shark, working with him as if he was a patrol boat...
I have little knowledge of scripting/coding for this kind of thing, but I believe that the pig is nearly as smart as the standard AI [mercs]. The shark, birds, frogs, seagulls, parrots, grasshoppers and bugs are very simple entities, not nearly as complex as the pig. An example: if you encounter the pig and it sees you, sometimes it squeals and alerts the mercs to your position. You run through some frogs or bugs and it's no big deal. Nor do you squish them with your boots, etc.
I asked if you were the 'safari animals' modder and you didn't respond. I now assume that you are not. I suggest you contact him [over on Crymod.com, where the big modders hang out] and pick his brains. Because what he is doing is like 90% the same as what you're trying to do, with the exception that I believe he is doing it in a safari-like environment, whereas you're working within the FarCry jungle atmosphere.
As I suggested to another modder, you should really post over on Crymod.com, where they are far more advanced and can help you out with your 'animal life' mod. On FF here, we can answer simple questions and help you with campaign mode, and technical problems, but that advanced community is really over on Crymod.com. Thanks, and good luck.
personally firehawk i think you should wait for fc 2 (which i don't think will be here anytime soon) or Crysis (crysis looks awesome get this game). then you might not have to do as much work, and will be in an even more realistic environment (destructive vegetation perfect for animals that eat, survival material etc.). Crymod has been very helpful to me and soon i will be releasing a tutorial on rigging a spider (basic one) and a weapon that will be in a mod. check it out should be done this month. i'll also release here.
