ok this is a graphics forum, now i knw that it seems to only pertian to sigs and stuff, but im gessing it pertians to skinning and such.

now i am making a skin for far cry, for the m4. now i understand that game uses normal maps, the trouble is thoug, how do i use the regurlar skin i have made to generate a normal map? i have photoshop cs, and the nv tools normal map plug in. i can generate a normal map from the skin, but when i do it looks a little strange (diffrent from other normal maps).

and also on a side note, when u made your skins for far cry u made changes to the shiny, and the normal maps, how did u do so? because i cant find, for example, the bump map for the deagle. i knw in far cry the normal maps have a ddn in the name, but the only skin for the deagle is teh regualr skin, this pertians to all teh weapons (except the wrench which has a ddn file and teh vehicles). and whn i look at the whench cfg file, it says in a line of code: wrench_ddn.dds which is teh normal map, but when i look for the one for the deagle it says: DEFUALTNOUVs.dds so hmm im a little confused on were the deagle gets its normal map.

Normal map: Desaturate your skin and apply the filter. Bump maps: Look in the alpha channels. How come there's no "Mapping, modeling and skinning" forum for Far Cry?

ok when i desaturate, and apply the flter, i get the same result as if i had left it a regular color image. is that normal?

and hm far cry doesnt use bump maps i dont think, because bump maps are just gray scale arent they? and normal maps are teh blues greens and purple ones arnt they?

this does apply for far cry but the part on generating normal maps applys to all games and graphics, i would like to skin other games, and this information would be extremly help full

I told you, open the skin in photoshop and look at the alpha channels. The bump maps are there.

Look at the original skins to figure out how it works. Looking at something you make will not show you anything because what you're looking for is not there. And yes, I'm saying just that. Not just the guns, but everything.

ah ic, thank you, but just to know, what were the original ddn normal map files for? didnt they do just the same thing? did they do a better job?

ps to create the alpha channel, dont i just copy the rgb image into the alpha channel? cuz when i do that it seems to work.

No. You need to paint your own.

ok i hafto hand paint every detial? also, i found out how to use a normal map, first i generate one, then i open, for say the m4.cgf file, and were it says nodefualtuvs.dds (the file it would use for its normal map), i change it to m4_ddn.dds (which is my normal map) and it seems to work ingame. hm i wonder if this method is easyer than using gray scales, or if it gives better quality.

A bump map has very little detail, so it won't be hard. You can use it for scratches, rust, embossings, labels, veins, scars, pimples, etc.
