I've been pretty quiet with my mapping. I'm preparing for my first singeplayer map release, SP_Tropix. The plot is relatively simple [my first map of this kind], the mission objectives straight-forward, and the graphics stunning if your computer can handle them. I like to think the beginning of the level reminds me of the Fort level, but only in terms of how the terrain appears. I did not take a level from the directory and hack at it to make it my own, this is 100% on my own steam.

I've been working on the map for a few days now and am tweaking it for release. In the past I've had many problems with singleplayer maps; trying to create them, work with the AI, etc. But I think I've solved these problems. Working with the AI isn't what gives me headaches [near migranes, dear God], it's the LUA scripting and linking all the complex objectives to each other. I believe I've solved this by using audio to direct the player. You could ignore the overhead voice [mine] and just screw around, but that's like doing things in the wrong order [10, 4, 2, 9, etc] instead of in the proper order [1, 2, 3, 4, etc]. I hope to get this map done before I have to go back to college in a few short weeks. Wish me luck and here are some beta-screenshots to tide you over till then, :).

I've not uploaded any new content to the website, I'm holding out for when I finish this map and then I'll upload all the sites [and have new sites under the N88TR.net domain as well, :).] and this map all at once, hopefully I'll be at my dorms on campus with my T3 lines so it happens quickly, :).

In hindsight, I'm doing something I always end up doing but never intend to do from the start of making a map: I make it too big. Nearly all of my multiplayer maps, and now in my singleplayer works. But in SP_Tropix, I started out small [and just right, where I still had perfect control over everything on the map] and then I had a dozen ideas I wanted to incorporate into the map and it quickly grew. Currently, SP_Tropix is my largest map I've ever worked on, bar none [it's probably as big as 6 MP_Bloods put together].

I've realized that all my ideas that I'm putting into the map are really good ones and they should stay [This SP mapping business is a lot easier than I thought it would be, IDK why but in the past I was just worrying too much and making things more complicated than they really were.]. However, I will not be able to make the release date of August 18th, 2007. The map is just too big with too many things that I need to improve on, add vegetation, tweak AI, audio recording and editing, etc. As I was capturing the two screenshots for my post here I thought of making a smaller SP map that would be my first singleplayer map release [I have promised myself to get one out there before I go back to college on the 18th of August, it's been a promise long in the making.] and later I could focus my spare time energies on SP_Tropix, making it a very worthy second release.

I am not asking permission, just letting you all know. I cannot express how happy I am that things are coming together for me in terms of my singleplayer FarCry mapping. It is easier than I thought it would be, and I still have dozens [if not hundreds] or ideas for singleplayer maps.

So I'll try to get the first map done and out the door within a week [or less!] and get ready for college and then when I have spare time I'll work on SP_Tropix. I was thinking of a small map, lush and hilly with one or two objectives. Maybe only 20 mins of gameplay, but a very rich environment of vegetation and fauna. I'm so happy for myself and what the community will soon get to play. I have no name for the first map, but I'll have one soon enough. I'll get back to work on the first map and here are some screenshots of SP_Tropix, as it gets closer to it's release [IDK on the release date of it, but if I have as much free time as I did last year, maybe sometime in the beginning or middle of September.]:

Update:

I've been having trouble with my wireless network at home and have been unable to connect [using father's laptop ATM] to the internet. Just wanted to fill you guys in,

Until I get my internet back, I am working everyday on my maps on the basis that when I go back to college in the fall [sept 4th], I will upload my new website [n88tr.net, /farcryfiles, /gaminggalleries, /redforest, /designermp] have all been remade 100%], maps, and other FarCry achievments at that time.

There are other maps besides SP_Tropix and SP_Traumatic, namely SP_Diabolical, as medium-sized singleplayer map using custom brushes such as vegetation and structure, which really make the map shine. With Diabolical, [no screens sorry, I want to wait until I can upload my MP maps, website, etc. I want to do it all at once.] it all about custom brushes and making FarCry a bit more interesting.

SP_Tropix and SP_Traumatic will probably end up being dual-releases when I get back to college, so that will make me extremely pleased. When I get my mapping questions over on Crymod answered, I will probably get both maps done within a matter of hours. Oh yes, it's very good to have things come together like this.

So there's the update, and wish me luck with the mapping, people answering my questions, and my wireless issues. Cya.

I was over on Crymod and Clivey was right [of course he was!], they have updated their mods and members so they're much more helpful than before. Thank you Crymod! I have resolved 90% of my singleplayer mapping problems and am nearing release of the map [even if I get it done tomorrow it won't be released till when I get back to college where I'll upload my site and all my other FarCry goodies] SP_Traumatic.

I still hope to have a dual release of SP_Traumatic and SP_Tropix, but Tropix is about 3 times as large as Traumatic. To put things in perspective, Traumatic is a little bigger than SP_Fort [one of the official FarCry maps]. Size matters! If I had to say Traumatic's bigger flaw, it would be size. It's not big enough for a real campaign, but Tropix is. I have Tropix storyboarded out but have yet to record the audio objectives [how you are directed in the map].

I remember I started Traumatic because I had new ideas that I didn't want to put into Tropix because it was already large enough, but Traumatic is actually pretty claustrophobic compared to Tropix [I know it's probably hard for the people who haven't played the map for all this to make sense, but if you pick up on my hints and comparisions it should make things a little easier, ;).]. Traumatic is a couple objectives, nothing unique either than the fact that it's my first singleplayer map, but Tropix will have a unique setting and objectives, atleast unique because I've never played a singleplayer map like it.

As I map a level, some parts always remind me of other maps I've played or created, that's just how it is for me. It's never completely new, but it's always exciting when I'm making a map, even it's kinda boring like if it's for one of the designer map packs ["version 5.0" of the MP series is in the works BTW, more info on that when the webs get updated in september]. But mapping in FarCry has become a bit more emotional for me. I map because I like to, I really, really like to. I do it because I'm bored, because I'm nervous, because I'm whatever, it really fills a lot of me emotions, kinda like a drug [heh]. So when I get up in the morning, I eat breakfast, go workout, come home and have my whey protein shake, a shower, then I map. I map for 3 or 4 hours, have a snack, more mapping, another snack in 4 or 5 hours, back to the gym again, then mapping till dinner time, and more mapping after that till bed. It's really a big part of my summer life so far, and probably until I go back to college in the fall.

I worked and tried really hard on singleplayer mapping and after 3 years [seriously] of struggling with it, I've conquered it. Granted, I still can't code in LUA, but I know I'm too hard on myself. I set a goal 3 years ago to make some singleplayer maps and that goal is becoming a reality. It might not mean much you, you just download the maps and yeah or nay if they're good and that's the connection you have with me: I'm your map provider. I don't know how I feel about this relationship, but it's okay. I wish it could be more substantial, but it's alright.

So the singleplayer maps are coming along VERY nicely and they WILL be ready for download and properly displayed on the new webs when they get uploaded in september [I know I'll get Traumatic done tomorrow or the next day, and Tropix in a week or less. Diabolic will take a bit longer, I don't know if I'll get that done before college starts back up. I'll try, :).], and I have also completed a fairly large number of new multiplayer maps. 8 in fact, are nearly complete, and maybe a couple more will get added to the list if I have spare time and the singleplayer maps get done sooner than I expect. The 8 MP maps are in fact, high quality maps and ALL will have their .CRY files included.

I received a few emails [oh my god!] on my [EMAIL="n88tr@n88tr.net"]n88tr@n88tr.net[/EMAIL] account and they were extremely postive that I have been including the .CRY files to my maps on a more regular basis, so I'll continue that. Cheers!

Oh and here are 3 screenshots from SP_Traumatic that I managed to create, they don't reveal too much so there's no big spoilers. ;).

Okey dokey. Long story short: I got back to college and used about 95% of my weekly allotted bandwidth on downloading Crysis videos so I have very little left for uploading the map [and the webs and the 12 new MP maps I made].

I'll get it all uploaded ASAP [prolly tomorrow afternoon, when my old cap is lifted and the new one starts] and just a heads up, for the first couple of days, the SP_Traumatic map will be a PlanetPhillip.com exclusive download. After some days I'll release it to the other sites including Filefront.com.

I was unable to complete Tropix, but I have hopes of getting it done relatively soon if I am able to really milk my free time here at college.

Cheers.

That is really quite impressive. I was talking to the DOG a few weeks back and he was kinda frustrated about trying to mod the ocean waves [he was trying to make them more impressive, like waves crashing on the beach, white crests, etc], seems you've figured it out. Nice work!

I've been replaying SP_Traumatic trying to get good screen captures but in the meanwhile I bought a new graphics card, a Evga 8800 GTS 320 mb [DX10 ready, though I'm using it for killer DX9 performance]. So I'm like nearly done with the installation of it, and all I have to do is install the drivers and I have high hopes of it coming through. I still have to wait on my bandwidth to replenish, so the webs, all the maps and new captures will be uploaded early this coming week [tuesday prolly, if I can stop downloading everything, heh.]. Thank you for you patience during this time of great upheaval in my releases world. I promise SP_Traumatic [72 mb] will be good and I promise the the websites [250 mb overall] will be more interactive and more helpful to you in all your FarCry [and Crysis] modding adventures.
