So you're persephone blue88? wait til you get to the demongate mission. ents stink. So do mutants.
Ents stink? Mutants too? you're crazy. Ents are awesome...take an ent, guard it with some basalisks in wedge formation, braniacs in line formation, gnomes in line/semicircle formation, and mutants in semicircle formation, and you've got a very powerful small army that can move pretty well and is great for both offense and defense...It'd be formidible even without the Ent's protector ability, but with it, it's even more dominating. It'd take concentration on the enemy's part to disrupt that kind of force, with some type of spell or combos of spells.
Also, a flyer's usefulness depends on what god you use, i guess...when i was playing w/ lev1 stratos, lev2+3 james, and 4+ perseph, I made about 4-6 braniacs to support Toldor...mainly to help him in case he was being overwhelmed, and to distract enemies from him...but then, i always concentrated on giving him as much support as possible...made controlling all the units (through controlling him) much easier.
flyers are good......but you have to use them at the right time.....you must make sure that the ranged units aree taken out/busy.....then they really kick some ass.......
gremlins(?) are good at keeping a wizard busy whilst descrating, put 3 or 4 on web duty on him
Flyers were intended to be support units- meaning that they are generally more important for thier special abilities. I definately found the second tier flyers very helpfull in SP as one of the fastest ways to keep the AI wizards busy.
well i hawe this annoying headace now so i hawe not read all the posts in this thred but flyers well i hawe 2 flyers in my custom spellbook the level 1 ones and the icarus or what they are called now iacant remember ?? and the rest is pure meele becouse i do not like the flyers but i hawe found out that it can be good to spawn up a couple of those flyers when in a mp game you se that your opponent only hawe meele they just kick ass then well a couple of those lvl1 flyers in phalax formation in thae back can be good as a last line of defense

I like fliers, because when I see them in the enemy force, I know I can kill them with a single lightning bolt. (1-soul ones, that is).
I usually try to keep about 2-3 at most in a mixed army. If my soul count is really low, 2 at most. They do really have useful attacks when it comes to supporting your other troops. Braniacs and shrikes knock enemy's down, and on occasion will knock an enemy wizard down. Gargoyles and spitfires do good damage in groups. 2 gargoyles will deal a lot of damage if left alive long enough.
Flyers are really good though to summon in the middle of battle, when confusion is going on and they have a better chance of being neglected by enemy attacks.
I would say not to make too many of them, but a few flyers for support can help you win a battle.

Cool y'all. Good stuff, thanks.
It seems to me after some experimentation last night that souls are kind-of wasted on flyers before the battle gets going. Sure - you can keep 'em back at the start and bring them in when the enemy missile is distracted, but as I see it you're better off using those souls in shock troops (hard hitting melee), then picking the souls up and summoning flyers if appropriate when the melee go down. That way you've got all your souls in the fight all the time and not sitting around waiting for an opportunity that may not come. No reason to be outnumbered unnecessarily at the start of the battle, even if it is only for a few seconds...
In the early game (considering there are no fallen) you can...
Use melee units and run at the enemy ranged units. There seems to be a growing consensus that you have to go melee vs melee that is a bit strange.
Use ranged units to sit back and fire at the enemy, especially any nearby air units.
Use flying creatures to protect your ranged units.
