I discovered that strange problem today on el alamein. I was alterantly on the way with the panzer 4 and the panzer 3. The other team had quite a good Hurricane pilot, who did a good annoying job in destroying all my panzer 4 f2. Even to the front he did some little damage to me. The rear seemed the most vulnerable part. Ok so far so good, I thought and took me a panzer 3 in hope to possibly outmaneuver the plane. Ok that plan wasn't successfull, but on that way I doscovered that the Hurricane couldn't harm me anywhere he hit my p3. Rear, side, front not even a scratch. Same with a beaufighter later on, but I think hurri and beau use same cannons. That should be fixed soon.

According to my data, the PzKpfw IIIJ had 18mm of armour on the deck while the PzKpfw IV F1 and F2 had just 12mm. The 20mmx110 round fired by the Hispano HS.404 cannon penetrates 15mm at a nominal 500m, so this accounts for what you experienced.

Sort of counterintuitive, don't you think? :)

that's indeed counterintuitive. Obviously it doesn't make a lot of sense to reduce the thickness of armor in an advanced product series, as in this case from panzer 3 to panzer 4. So we don't have a bug here, but some historic weirdness. Nevertheless this clarification shows me once again how well you and your fellow workers did your job concerning historic accuracy. Thumbs up!

Well, they were different tanks. I do not think they were 'considered ''upgraded". They probably used the Panzer 4 chassis/turret because the Panzer 3's could not accommodate the size of the new gun.

It's possible to kill a pz 3 with a Hurricane though.

Between the III-series and the IV-series panzers the re-organized the armor concentration. Probably to focus the weight where it would matter the most since the increase in guns were consitent. Where in the early days of the war AT guns were between 37 - 50mm, with the introduction of the KV-I and T-34 tanks the guns were larger at +75mm (76.2mm for the KV-I and T-34). So more armor was focused to the front of the hull and turret, leading to less armor in the rear and top. As the war progressed and engines got stronger the PzIV's added armor all around and adding side skirts.

that pilot must be good if he only kills the tank by shooting with cannons, not by suicide run or bomb runs.

I can take them out with ease if I just fly low, few meters from ground and hit the side armor/tracks.

historically , the pz4 was mainly planned to take the role as an infantry support tank instead as the backbone of the german army. So they took the F1 chassis and even ugraded the cannon to the tremendous 75mm as a compromise. First the ausf. g got some major armor upgrades wich had seen action at the late 42's, thus primary in tunisia.
