Which do you prefer, a strong spellbook, or a strong choice of units?

alright, I'm pretty new. Having just beaten the campaign and stuff. Anyhow -- from my limited experiance the best way to approach this is to have a fairly clear idea of what you want to accomplish with either your spells or units. Once you have a cohesive(my spelling sucks) plan, implement it. exmaple:

I want to kill/neutralize enemy wizards early in the game. I take fallen/vortick as lvl one and two. Vortick to neutralize the spell casting and immbolize, fallen for damage.

To further this goal, I want more direct damage spells. The flame dragon pyro spell, grasping vines (for finishing if possable).

This unit combination is vulnerable to melee, so I take taurock to soak up damage and slow down enemy units.

So now my tactics in combat are: send vorticks after wizard, follow with fallen, have taurocks delay melee units. Do as much direct damage to enemy wizard as possable using spells. Clean up/convert.

Now this spell/unit selection is impossable I'm just making an example. ;)

What are you talking about?

I was just asking everyone that when playing solo and making your custom book (If you do), do you try to get a really powerful spellbook, or a really good combo of units.

You asked whether people choose spells or creatures, and he answered, "It depends on what strategy I feel like using." Which I think makes sense.

I haven't built any custom books yet (I want to play through with loyalty to each god first) so I don't really have an answer.

Yep, what he said. You try to get both spells and units that work toward the same thing.

I favor strong units over spells any day... spells are nice, but they are best used with discretion. You don't want to become dependant on them only to have your manahoars die at an inopportune time... spells are useful but, like the knife in Alice they are necessary but not sufficient.

Mostly I'm looking at the critters, and I only use the spell as a kind-of tie breaker. Many exceptions of course, depending on the theme of my deck- ...erm, book. smile.gif It's one thing to have a "tough critter" book, but throw in a Rainbow and ooh la la! The Gnome is just there for the ride.

Raise Dead, for example, is a spell I'd be happy to swap some critters for...
