The original Playstation & PS2 are market leaders because Sony were very clever about their target audience. For a long, long time, consoles were the domain of kids. Kids who relied on others (parents etc) to buy games for them. This of course, would usually only happen once or twice a year at birthdays and Christmas. Other purchases were on the whole, rare. Sony, with the original Playstation targeted it's games at a more mature audience. Games like the original Tekken, the Ridge Racer series, Gran Turismo, Wipeout and Survival Horror gems like Resident Evil, Dino Crisis and Parasite Eve were all targeted at young adults. This was a brilliant ploy by the marketeers at Sony. People aged between 18 - 25 have the most disposable income available. They have jobs (or a steady government subsidised income for students) but very little to pay out. Not many between those ages own homes. They have a lot of cash to spend on themselves, as opposed to Nintendo kids with very little and reliant on parental gifts. The PS2 pushed things even further. It was the most powerful console in the world at the time and was cleverly released in small quantities (making it a desirable item). I got my PS2 on day of release in the U.K. I was the envy of nearly everyone I knew. The games choice was fantastic, backwards compatibility meant that all old PS1 games could be played, and it looked so fucking cool... So many people bought into the idea of PS2 that the X-Box and Gamecube didn't stand a chance of challenging it. I've typed enough. These are the reasons why PS2 is the Number One console. The next Playstation will just strengthen Sony's position as Market Leader.

Yes, the X-Box is more powerful. But it doesn't matter. PS2 is a far superior machine. Gameplay is the key, and PS2 has top games galore. X-Box has Halo, and... Halo? That's pretty much it.
