I think this new update has proved too much for my old Radeon 8500LE graphics card but money's a bit tight at the moment. Does anyone think a short term upgrade to an 9600 would help my lag problem-or should I just save for a 9800 pro?

I have a 9600SE (the worst of the 9600s) and I have everything maxed out except for the card settings (ie. Anti-aliasing, etc.) which I keep at default. I average around 40 fps which you can't notice at all unless you're used to 100 fps. At any rate, it doesn't affect my game.

Or you could go for a 9700pro OEM which still sells on a leading UK website ,100 uk pounds which is cheap for such a card

I would recommend that you go for the 9800 pro. (watch out so you dont get the version with 128Mbit memorybus, not to be confused with 120mb ram) since you can probably use it for several years, even on never games like HL2.
